    Software Engineer Interview

    Difficult Interview

    Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at OpenTable (San Francisco, CA).

    Interview

6 rounds, mostly with engineers, 1 with VP of engineering. Overall process was very smooth. I felt interview experience was very similar to AirBnB except Airbnb's cultural round at the end. They also gave me a take home exercise which I enjoyed working on. I would rate it 5/5 on good quality questions and difficulty level. Keeping interviews difficult is very important to hire the best and keeping the culture good.

    Interview Questions

    • Standard algorithmic problems related to their business and real world, dynamic programming problems, N x N grid.   Answer Question

    Negotiation

They pay well, better than industry standard I believe.

But they were really specific to the position applied for and hence made a lot of sense.Plus all of the questions we real world problems being solved none of the text book questions like the other companies.   Answer Question

    Interview

had one phone interview with recruiter, then another with someone in the marketing department and then the last interview was with 4 or 5 people in marketing in the actual office in San Francisco. Everyone was friendly and down to earth, questions were not too difficult. The office itself is cool. The entire interview process took about a week or so depending on your schedule

    Application

I applied through an employee referral. I interviewed at OpenTable.

    Interview

Two sets of interviews. First set had two 30 minute interviews, second set had three 30 minute interviews (3 people - 2 of the same as the first round). None of them were particularly difficult. i was asked about my prior work experience, why I thought the job would be a good fit, strengths/weaknesses, etc. No curveball questions.

    Interview Questions

    • The most difficult question I was asked was probably to name an experience where things didn't go as planned (aka failed) and how I turned around from it. (again, not a rare question, but difficult to answer).   Answer Question

    Application

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 1+ week. I interviewed at OpenTable.

    Interview

I was referred by someone within the company (OT is big on employee referrals), and someone followed up with me within two days of my resume submission. I had a phone interview with a recruiter for 45 minutes, during which we went over preliminary details about me and the job (normal screening) and then we scheduled an in person interview for the following week. The interview scheduling and confirmation were both clear and quick, which was great. I was greeted with 5 minutes of my arrival to the office, and then I interviewed for about 40 minutes with three people who were relevant to the position. I heard back right after my interview, and was followed up with the next day as well. Overall it was a very pleasant process.

    Negotiation

I told the recruiter my baseline for compensation, and I was offered well above that.

    Easy Interview

    Application

I applied online. I interviewed at OpenTable (Boulder, CO) in February 2014.

    Interview

Very disorganized. Had scheduled phone interview times with me, only to not have them show up at the appointed time-had to resend the confirmation email they had sent to me. Then after the interview finally takes place, they assign this "homework' that went to further my suspicion that they have no respect for anyone's time.
