Interviewed Sep 2011 (took a day)
I had never been employed before, and i was finding it hard to get a job interview with anyone, let alone a company i'd enjoy working for.
Then i got a phone call. She asked if i was interested in scheduling an interview, well i of course said yes. When i got there, she took me to the breakroom, as started asking me questions. Mostly questions about animals. Asked me if i'd ever had any animals, what kind, how i took care of them, what i fed my parrot, ect.
We talked about where i was from, and how i would feel about selling feeder mice.
I thought it went very well, and she told me she call me the next day to let me know either way. She called, told me she would like to offer me a job. I accepted, and i came in that day to do some paperwork. I was put on the floor the next day. It was so fast.

We agreed on a pay wage.
I'd recommend taking this job, if you are a hard worker and love animals. We are so centered on animals, and it's so fun being about to be around animals all day.

Interviewed Dec 2011 in Hanover, PA (took a day)
When I went in for my interview, I was told to wait at the front of the store while another interview was finishing up. I waited nearly 40 minutes. I was then informed by the interviewer that it was not typically her job to conduct interviews. The one who normally does it decided to take a vacation that week.
The interview then began with a hand shake, about two minutes of complete silence, and the basic questions (past experience, if I own any pets, how many pets I own, if I'm willing to work with certain types of pets, etc.). However, no questions about my previous work history or other relevant experience were presented.
The actual interview was short. After revealing my experiences with animals (owning and caring for cats, dogs, chinchilla's, turtles, guinea pigs, various birds, etc) and having the job responsibilities explained to me, I got a hand shake and a "I'll pass your application and resume on and we'll call you".
Of course, there was no call.

Interviewed Jan 2012 in San Antonio, TX (took 4 days)
I received a call to set up a phone screen. The screening took place the next day. It was professional, yet informal. I received an email later that same day asking if I could do a face to face with the hiring manager.
The face to face was scheduled for 2 days later. I met with not only the hiring manager but also with the Director of HR. Both interviews were professional yet friendly. I am returning next week for another interview with the team!

Interviewed Jan 2012 in San Diego, CA (took 2 weeks)
I was contacted and had a phone interview with the talent acquisition specialist which went very well. (Very relaxed, very pleasant to talk to, and very professional. Overall a great conversation.)
I was then contacted by the hiring manager for a 30 minute phone interview which went well (a little dry, not very pleasant).
From there I received an e-mail (actually four separate e-mails) from a different talent acquisition specialist and was asked to complete the following:
a) a written application request which needed to be faxed back within 48hrs (which requires a Social Security Number)
b) a behavioral exam which needed to be completed within 48hrs.
c) a username for a separate online program that required you to request 7-25 recommendations from other people. They need to reply within 4 days, you need to assess yourself, and most of my professional references indicated the questions to be extensive. The program states you will receive a report showing what the results are, however, if I recall correctly you have to pay for it.
*Note - I received this request on the Friday before a three day Holiday weekend. Personally, I feel it was unreasonable to ask an applicant to complete this process within 48hrs. Given the national Holiday weekend it was tough to ask your references to complete the request quickly.
I was given a time and date for the interview, along with a map and written instructions on how to get there which was helpful. I received confirmation I would be meet two people, one in the first hour, the second would enter for thirty minutes after that.
The first discussion was professional but very dry. The hiring manager made every indication that the meeting was over and had body language that suggested I should follow. I started following him/her to the door. While walking out the door I met his/her manager, and WAS NOT INTRODUCED verbally but instead the Sr. Manager told me to "STAY". I must admit my surprise- it is the first meeting I've ever been to where a manager did not introduce their direct manager by name when they walk into a room during an interview. The exchange was rough to say the least.
Overall the interview conversation could have been more professional on their part with even a simple introduction to the second party joining the room, conversation was very dry, and lacked a friendly atmosphere from the start and throughout. There was no small talk to make a guest feel comfortable and/or welcome. I would normally not mention this, however, in the call I asked the hiring manager what the environment was like, and was told it was much more relaxed and personable than many of the other places he/she had experienced. (The website also mentioned dogs and pets were welcome in the office which painted a very friendly environment in my mind.) I also noticed the receptionist was unfriendly and did not return a smile when I smiled and said "hello" and "goodbye". In retrospect, this was probably a great indication as to the environment and what was to come next.
In summary, I felt the process could have been more professional, more welcoming, took way to much effort upfront (from myself, AND my professional references), and the location lacked a friendly environment to pursue a career in. I also do not like being asked for my social security number prior to being offered a position. I understand background checks are needed, however, I believe that can be conditional to employment when the offer is extended. I would have had to overcome serious doubts before accepting the opportunity given that environment. Luckily I was not put in that position as the company did not extend an offer.
I hope my experience was just due to the individuals I was meeting with (as the first talent specialist was VERY friendly). Unfortunately given the rank of the managers and the unhappy receptionist, the unwelcoming environment in that building may have been created from the top down.
There are several buildings to interview in, so you may have a better experience than I did.
I hope this helps and Good Luck!

Interviewed Nov 2011 in Livermore, CA (took a day)
I'd heard that a new PETCO location was opening in my town, so I applied online. I received a call for an interview about a month and a half later. Since the actual location isn't opened yet, our interview took place at a career center one town over.
I wasn't told it was a group interview until I got there, and I was pretty nervous about that considering my past experience with group interviews. There were about 7 of us in front of a panel of PETCO managers. They had us take turns answering their questions. The start was a little rocky because a few people were late, and I was certainly pretty anxious. We started to loosen up, though, and the interview got better. It only lasted about 10 minutes, and they dismissed us afterward. I got a call the very next day for a job offer.

Interviewed Aug 2011 in Portsmouth, NH (took 2 weeks)
It was good when I took it with the Assistant Manager, he was very nice and optimistic about me having the position, the GM on the other hand was very rude and I just took it. Not really much for questions just looking over my resume and talking about my past experiences.

Interviewed Apr 2010 (took 5 days)
District manager called me and I went to the store at time and date given. Spoke with General Manager, District Manager for about 10 Minutes. Was asked to go on the floor and ask 3 employees whether they had pets if so, how many and report back to office. I was called two days later and given start date and time. Dist. mgr was very nice at first glance, but turned out to be rather inflexible and very picky about tiny little things.
