Interviewed Jan 2010 in San Diego, CA (took 1+ week)
A search firm brought the opportunity to my attention. I had a great phone interview with both the search firm and the individual the position would report too. Once the phone interviews were concluded I was then set-up for a day of in-person interviews with roughly 6 people. The internal recruiter who guided me through the process was very pleasant. I was given numerous IQ-based, personality and problem solving assessments. I was interviewing for a role in the HR department. Several of the HR people were rather unimpressive due to their rudeness and lack of interview skills. One of the interviewers was not feeling well and was coughing and sneezing in my direction without an apology. The head of HR was awful he kept me waiting for 25+ minutes, had little to no eye contact. I got the feeling he did not like me yet we had a very energetic phone conversation - perhaps he is more comfortable over the phone than in person. He would not engage in a detailed conversation and actually refused to answer one of my follow-up questions. The only people worth meeting was the head of marketing and the CFO - both very engaging, we had very thoughtful dicussions. HR should be the most skilled department in interviewing candidates and they were not. They all seemed bored and gave me the impression they would rather be somewhere else.
I think that Petco needs to treat their candidates better the receptionist was rude as I was 15 minutes early and she informed me that her day did not start yet although she was at her desk she would not acknowledge me until the 15 minutes had passed. It was a shame as I was really excited about the opportunity and big pet lover/owner and was a long time customer. You need to treat all candidates with respect as they are future and or current customers. I now spend more of my money with Petsmart.

There was an initial interview with a recruiter. This was followed by an interview with the District Manager. Following the interview with the District Manager, I interviewed with a Human Resources rep. After that I interviewed with an RVP. Be very customer oriented. Interviewed Jul 2010 in Frankfort, KY (took 1+ week)
After applying online and uploading a resume, I received a call within a few weeks. The caller was the GM of the future location that is being built. She asked a few simple questions and set up a time for an interview for the upcoming week. She seemed nervous and not quite comfortable speaking with me on the phone. It sounded as if she were reading from a prompt and not at all authentic with her enthusiasm. At this point I was still interested in the job, but certainly deterred by our phone conversation. When I arrived for my scheduled interview, there were two managers. Another candidate and I took seats facing away from one another and were interviewed at the same time by our respective manager. This seemed more of a meat market than an authentic interview process. The manager introduced himself to me without making any eye contact and I was immediately uncomfortable with the process. "Tell me about yourself". He said, while looking down at a piece of paper. So I did. I gave him the usual slightly detailed version of me, including that I have extensive knowledge and background in reptiles and reptile husbandry. He perked up a little when I mentioned that. When I inquired about pay, he averted his eyes and stumbled on his words. He could not give me a straight answer when it came to certain vital information like: different management positions, the process of hiring, raises, assessments, duties and expectations. This very much discouraged me, and he seemed to be symbolic of this company culture in general. When I told him that without any sort of guarantee of pay, it was a risk I was not willing to take he seemed slightly irritated. He insinuated that because I was a college student I would not be a permanent employee. He made assumptions, and harshly stepped out of his professional demeanor.
Interview Questions
Reason for Declining
I declined the offer because PetCo does not seem to care very much about the individual. The interview was terrible and the efforts to seem professional failed miserably. The tone and environment offset their mission statement drastically, and I sure hope they treat their animals better than they do their employees. Low pay and lackluster unqualified management are not the qualities I look for in a prospective employer.

Interviewed Feb 2010 in San Mateo, CA (took 3 weeks)
I applied for a grooming assistant, sales associate, and dog trainer. They called me for the first interview and asked easy questions in their office. They asked me to wait for their next phone call for a follow-up. I waited two weeks and they called me back for an interview with the assistant manager. I came in and found out the assistant manager was not in, but the manager came in a little later and had to deal with arguing customers. I understood the situation and waited, yet when I was finally "interviewed" they realized they called in the wrong person, yet offered to give me an assistant dog training position. They said they would set me up with a third interview with the assistant manager and the person in charge of dog training to get the "feel" of the job. I waited it out a week, called them back, found out from the assistant that the manager needs to make a final decision, yet he was out of the country... I called again asking about the position, it was not filled but the assistant said he would ask the manager. Ever since then I gave up and never received a call. Very disorganized and unprofessional in my opinion. I will never apply to this store again.

Interviewed Aug 2009 (took 2 weeks)
I filled out the application online and about two or three weeks later i received a call from the company asking me if I wanted to come in for an interview. I accepted their offer and arranged a time that would work for both of us. I came in for the interview and they asked me about my experience with animals ethical question for the most part. Then they contacted me about two weeks later and asked if I wanted the job.

Interviewed Jan 2010 (took 4+ weeks)
During the interview process I was asked about the usual questions that would be important for any retail job. I enjoyed the quickness of the interview, it was indeed very to the point. I always like the famous question of "why this company?" I thought over all the interview was good.

Interviewed Mar 2007 (took a day)
It was a very basic one on one interview. There were no extras. They just wanted to know if I liked and could handle all types of dogs as well as customer interaction and various other duties associated with the job.
