Interviewed Feb 2012 in Escanaba, MI (took 2 days)
I applied online and got called in for an interview. I went in and met with one of the assistant managers. She asked me basic questions such as asked me to tell her about myself. Than she did a personality assessment with all these different scenarios and asked me to tell her about a time I was in that situation and how I handled it. When that was done she had me meet her on the floor and we dd a role play on how I would sell her a shoe. After that it was basically over and I got a call the next day from the store manager for a secon interview. I didn't receive the message until a few days later and by then it was too late.

Interviewed Jun 2011 in Pittsburgh, PA (took 2 weeks)
Well I applied for an application online and I got a call the next day asking to come in for a job interview. Once arrived at the Payless Store the manager took me into the back room asking general work interview questions such as, In your past place of employment was there times you were mad at a customer and how did you deal with the situations. Or what do you do when one of your co workers is slacking. Questions such as those. but the one thing that really threw me off was she pulled a highlighter out and handed it to me and said "Sell me this highlighter." It just felt awkward. Next she took me out to the sales floor and asked me to sell her two pairs of shoes. When i was leaving she said if she was interested in hiring me she would give me a call with in the week. Two days later she called me and told me I had to go to a second job interview with another manager from another payless. She was in a room with a woman who did not introduce her self which later i found out was the district manager. The manager of that store also asked me those generic interview questions like where do you see your self in 5 years, what can you do for this company. Both interviews seemed to go well. As i was driving away from the second interview I got a call from the first manager i interviewed with she said "They loved you, I'm just going to call your work refrences and you can come in for training"

Interviewed Apr 2011 in Washington, DC (took a day)
In comparison with previous interviews I felt that that the interview was fairly simple. The manager asked me only a few questions regarding my previous jobs. The rest of the interview was just about what he expected of me as an associate and us exchanging our life stories.

Negotiation Details
THere was no negotiating it was either minimum wage or no job and with only 6 months of retail expereince and no sales experience I do not believe that I was in the best position to negotiate anyway.

Interviewed Jan 2012 (took 5 days)
There were two 1:1 interviews; first with the store manager, second with the district manager on separate days. The two are very nice people. I highly recommend going over all questions posted by other users on here and researching possible answers an search engines to help you come up with your own honest answer (or else the interview/s may be difficult). The first interview asked about 10 questions found in this site and the second had questions not found on here.
First interview:
Tell me about yourself.
Why Payless?
Describe a time a customer/person caused you stress.
What was the outcome?
Describe a time when you helped someone make a decision.
What was the outcome?
Tell me about the best team you ever worked with.
What was your role?
Tell me about a mistake you made.
What was the best customer service you had?

Interviewed Sep 2011 in Tustin, CA (took 1+ week)
I went in on the day the Manager told me to... And the associate called her and asked if she was coming in.... She wasn't and had me come in the next day. Sucked cause I don't drive.
Came in the next day and she asked me basic interview questions.
"How do you Handel stress"
Blah blah...
Then she had me role play selling shoes to her.
Set me up with a second interview with the Assistant District Manager.
She basically asked me about my work experience, and what I can bring to payless.
It took her about 2 weeks to get back to me to tell me if I had the job or not...
Which I did get hired.

I also received an email about the interview date. the first interview was at the primary payless location. It consisted of questions referring to teamwork and past work experiences. then we had a role play you had to convince the manager to buy a shoe. remember to suggest other items. for the second interview you go to another payless, do basically the same interview just with another manager. then you go to a drug testing place. then you get a cal back.

Interviewed Aug 2010 in Lincoln, NE (took a day)
It was pretty simple. The manager at that time was fabulous. A very fun personality to be around and thats what attracted me to the job. (I had no issues with this company until I got a new manager). I applied online, she called me for an interview the next day. I interviewed with her that same day, she said she really liked me and wanted to hire me, so she was going to go call her DM and get his approval and call me back. He approved, she called back to offer me the job.
