    Application

I applied through college or university. The process took 4+ weeksinterviewed at Petronas in May 2012.

    Interview

I was called for a chit-chat session of which they named "Technical Assessment" in March. However nothing technical were asked. The 2 interviewers just want to know some info on your family/education background, your current job scope (if you're working). Mind you the boring how-do-you-see-yourself-in-5-10 years will be asked in all sessions. Just relax, be warm and polite. The Structured Interview came in about 2 weeks after. I was told at first that there are 3 sections altogether; Case Study, Competency Based Interview and Role Play. For case-study, remember to read the article given line by line. Don't worry, you will be given some time to prepare. Identify the problem statement and elaborate as in you are making an essay. Be prepared to think carefully and answer in instance as the interviewers will try to probe your views on some other topics they think related. (My issue was Outsourcing but the interviewer did ask my opinion on merge and acquisition. they also expect me to give examples of successful/unsuccessful stories of these issues!). Please do not forget to prepare a conclusion for your points and it would be great if you managed to interrelate the points you given earlier before you draw a conclusion. Read the newspaper. You'll find it helpful :) The 2nd part is Competency Based (CBI). Basically they just want to see how you solve problems and how your react in difficult situations. Nothing much. Please do not worry if the interviewers did not conducted any of the part of interviews you heard/ read from others. I did not have to do the Role Play. My advise, relax and just be yourself. Don't talk too much or too less, and make decisions when you are asked to do so. After all, Petronas just want to see how you think and react. The most truthful and enjoyable interview experience I had to date. Good Luck! :)

    2. Case Study
You will be given an article from POTENTIA as a case study. The objective of this session is to see how you think and what you know ! Don’t worry so much on the topic as most of it is a general topic/knowledge. If you read a lot, will help you better in the session.

You are allowed to jot down your key points in a A4 paper given by the interview administrator. Your notes will later be collected by the interview administrator. You will be asked to discuss the case study from various point of views i.e. Key elements (why do you choose that as key elements?), wider implications, main problems, suggested solutions & the benefits.

    p) Publicity and Privacy
    q) sub contract
    r) Company Merging
    s) R&D

    3. Competency Behavioral Interview
Behavioral interviewing is interviewing based on discovering how the interviewee acted in specific employment related situations. The logic is that how the interviewee behaved in the past will predict how he/she will behave in the future, whereby this interviewing technique believes that past performance does predict future performance.
Some of the questions that they might asked :
    • How you handle conflicts
    • How you manage a team

Duration: +/- 15 minutes or so

    4. Role Play
You will be asked to do a role play together with the interviewer. There will be three separate cards which represent three different situations i.e. (Manager vs. Staff rep, Manager vs Teacher & etc). The interviewer (staff representative) will try to provoke you (manager) with various arguments. You will have to stand up for your principle and at the same time maintain the professionalism. The whole idea of this exercise is to examine your sense of empathy, integrity as well as professionalism.
In role play the interviewers will see how you progress with each card. The new card demand thougher role play than the previous one. Should you handle well he will pass you another card. It indicates good progress.
However sometimes the interviewers could not see clear indication how the candidates stand and he will pass on to a new card to see how the candidate handle it and compare it with his view on the previous card.
Be confident and have an open mind. View each situation considering all angles, ie the business that you in charged, environment ,the staff, people affected by the business and finally the nation and the world.

    Application

I applied online. The process took 3+ monthsinterviewed at Petronas (Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia)) in March 2012.

    Interview

I applied through online and received a phone call. Next they will send an e-mail of interview session.

The Structured Interview (SI) consists of 4 parts which are:
    1. Self Introduction
    2. Education/Working Background
    3. Previous Working Experience (day to day deliverable)
    4. Role Play

There will be 2 assessor for the SI session. Starting with your self-introduction, follows with your education or working background. These parts are easy however always emphasize on your key-points i.e. something different or highlights of your study/working time.

Part 3 is the part where you need to explain your day-to-day routine of your previous working experience. This will determine what is your key strength of your skills, knowledge, gained from your previous company.

Part 4 is a role play session where you will be in a scenario where you need to really act according to what the interviewee had given to you. Example: You are a manager of a petrochemical plant. Situation: There is complaint from local communities regarding a water pollution caused by your plant water outlets. Please response to them and local authorities regarding the complaint.

In any part of the SI, please be well versed and maintain your humble personality. This is the time where your first-impression will be judged and evaluated.

As the interview session is for entry position, no technical question was asked. However, if you are equipped with any technical/codes/standards knowledge, it is an added point for yourself.

    Interview Questions

    • The difficult part is whenever the assessor try to provoke you with difficult question just to see how far your emotional quotient level. Always try to maintain your voice low, be humble and never say things you don't familiar with (making things up). Be transparent and never put your ego beyond yourself.

Another difficult question is about location of work. For those who have a family, it is understood that you need to be close with them. Sometimes when the work requirement need you to relocate far away from your family, you need to be prepared with the fact that you are working far away from your family.
