Interviewed Apr 2008 in Laguna Niguel, CA (took a day)
You must fill out an application in the store, and Pier 1 does not accept anyone under eighteen years of age. Provide as much availability as possible, especially weekends. Pier 1 emphasizes being able to be friendly, and to function as a group with the other associates. They like people who are outgoing but polite and bright. Many store managers (especially this one) are particularly concerned with an interviewee’s dress sense. Where dress pants or a skirt, or very, very nice jeans, with a collared shirt or blouse, preferably white, but maybe blue or black or gray, with no logos and closed-toed dress shoes. They are testing a person’s ability to look and act professionally, to give care to customers and be able to help make sales. They are also concerned about an employee who is trustworthy and has a good work ethic, and a good sense of doing all types of work, from custodial, to merchandising, to selling, to heavy lifting. Do not fidget and speak clearly and write clearly. Be that outgoing, energetic person, and be prepared to convince the manager that you will be a good asset to the company.

Interviewed Oct 2008 (took 2 days)
Pier One's interview process first consisted with a general phone interview just for the manager to get a feel for your personality. Pier One has always prided itself on friendly customer service and the managers first job is to make sure your a "normal" person. Someone who can make casual conversation with someone they don't know. Above all, this is probably the most important thing they look for in their employees.

Interviewed Jan 2009 in Midland, TX (took a day)
very easy interview, consisting of many redundant interview questions associated with Retail stores, nothing stood out to me. The interviewer seemed intimidated, but was respectful and was willing to answer my questions honestly. The fact that the interviewer was not arrogant as many tend to be was a plus. I would say it took about 2 weeks to receive a phone call, however it was immediately following Christmas.

Interviewed Sep 2008 in Phoenix, AZ (took a day)
I had one interview with the store manager. He basically wanted to know how well i could sell a product. We did a role playing exercise where i had to sell him some candles. It was important to tie in as many products as possible during the pitch to the customer.

Interviewed Feb 2010 in Wilmington, NC (took 3 weeks)
Met with the store manager first. She asked a lot of behavior questions and what I thought about offering people a Pier 1 Rewards Card. I then met with the Assistant Manager who asked the same questions. They wanted to make sure their new hire was a great fit for the current team. I heard about a week later about receiving the position.

Interviewed Jan 2009 in Fort Worth, TX (took 3 weeks)
After applying through the college career services, I was called by the HR. HR asked few basic questions about my experience and what I would like to do at Pier 1. HR called me two weeks later to inform me about onsite interview. Interview with the managers was good. I wasn't asked technical questions but questions about how I go about working in a team and solving unsolvable problem.

Interviewed Jan 2008 in Savannah, GA (took a day)
I walked in, filled out the application. An assistant manager looked it over and said she would call me if they needed someone in that position. Two days later I got the call and we scheduled an interview. The assistant manager who was training to be a store manager interviewed me. She asked questions like what would you do if a customer asked a question and you didn't know the answer; can you work under a lot of pressure, can you multitalsk, lift heavy boxes, work different shifts... She also asked me to tell her about a time that I had to help an upset or angry customer and about a time when I did not agree with my store's policy and what i did about it. And of course where do you see yourself in 5 years...

Negotiation Details
I didn't really negotiate. She offered 7.50 and I took it. But a sidenote: Since I had managerial experience I was offered a full time assistant manager position 6 months later. Work hard, don't gossip, and be dependable and you could move up.
