A centrifugal pump looks a bit like a hair dryer and works similarly. The fluid enters through the side of the pump, where it is accelerated radially outwards by an impeller, then redirected into a one-dimensional flow by traveling through the "volute" to come out of what would be the nozzle of your hairdryer. Look on wikipedia for a more in-depth explanation.
