IT Service Desk at Progressive Insurance

No Offer – Interviewed in Mayfield Heights, Cuyahoga, OH Apr 2013 – Reviewed Apr 18, 2013

Interview Details – Went through a staffing agency. Started with an online assessment that was a combination wonderlic/behavioral type questions. Followed be a phone screening, which mostly entailed discussing your previous experience. If going for a tech support position, be prepared to discuss the most difficult issue(s) you had to resolve on your previous IT related job(s). Finally the actual in person interview. This interview consisted of two 15-minute parts, and mostly STAR questions ("tell me about a time when...", about 7 of them), and an opportunity to ask them questions. They really stretched me thin with the star questions, and there were a couple that I was not expecting or much prepared for. One good thing about the way they conducted the interview is that they explained what they are looking for is following the STAR format for answering, and they also gave a brief explanation of the topic before asking the question. For example, they would say, "This question deals with how you have handled stressful situations in the past..." followed by the actual question. This brief precursor was nice because it gave me a few moments to prepare my answer, instead of them just spitting question after question at me instantly without me having any chance to prepare.

The feedback they gave my staffing agency was that although I showed much enthusiasm and was prepared well for the interview, they felt I gave some examples in my past experience where I did not always follow the rules, and because of this they rejected me, stating "following procedures is high priority for this job". In the midst of trying to answer some of their tougher STAR questions, I may have spoken in a way once or twice which led them to believe I was breaking the rules in my example, but this was never actually the case. So the best advice I can give is make sure you never give an example which even gives them the SLIGHTEST inclination that you went against the rules when relating a previous experience.

I imagine progressive is a nice company to work for, but I also think they are very finicky with the way they hire people.

Claims Representative Senior at Progressive Insurance

Accepted Offer – Interviewed in Mayfield Heights, Cuyahoga, OH – Reviewed Jul 30, 2012

Interview Details – Submitted application and I I was sent an email with a link to take on line testing to determine if I was a good candidate for the job the next day. I took the tests which consisted of graph questions regarding earnings and some other basic business questions regarding loss or gains. It also included questions regarding good customer service view points. It was basically a behavioral test. After that, I was contacted the next day for a phone interview. The phone interview was a few days later. It consisted of behavioral questions, mostly from my previous/current position. At the end of the phone call I was invited for an in person interview 4 days after the phone call. I interview with two different Supervisors for an hour each. All Behavioral based questions. Be careful with what you say about why you left or are leaving your current position. Do a search on line about how to answer that questions. If you say things like "I hated my boss or I didn't get along with my co-worker's" you may as well forget receiving a job offer. They will wonder if you will just quit on them if you don't get along with your coworker. There are several other ways not to answer that question. Read up on it, on line.

Interview Question – I did role playing with a friend to prepare for the interview after finding 30 of the most difficult interview questions on line. I didn't get anything unexpected; however, I am VERY GLAD that I prepared because the interview is extremely extensive and they want very specific examples of how you have handled situations they ask about in your past. work history. You absolutely must be prepared or you may as well not even bother to apply.
a few of the questions:
1. Describe a specific time where you had to handle three tasks as one time with a deadline. What action did you take to work through the situation and what was the outcome.

2. Tell me about a specific time when you had to negotiate. What was the situation, what was the action you took and what was the final outcome.

3. Tell me about a specific time when you had a conflict with a co-worker or boss and how you handled it. What was the situation, what was the action you took and what was the final outcome.

4. Tell me about a time when you disagreed with a company policy. What was the situation/policy, what was the action you took, what was the final outcome.

The questions are all very, very specific and they are all just like the questions above. Read all the different Progressive interview questions on glass door, write them down and practice them over and over and over with someone else in order to prepare. It paid off for me and I was offered the position.
  Answer Question

Negotiation Details – There was really no negotiation phase for this position. The pay rate was listed in the job posting and that was that. Their "PTB" (paid time bank) days off are standard for every employee and increase the longer you are there.

Help Desk Analyst at Progressive Insurance

Declined Offer – Interviewed in Mayfield Heights, Cuyahoga, OH Dec 2011 – Reviewed Jan 27, 2012

Interview Details – I felt as though Progressive was a little slow with their methods on getting through the interview process. When I originally applied they closed the offer for the position that was open, then reopened it again so I had to reapply through a different agency. Afterwards, I had to take the online personality test and then if you pass that they will request a phone interview for you a few days later. After the phone interview it took a week for them to get back to the agency and request an interview a few days after that. The people seemed to be laid back and the interviewer will ask you difficult questions. My interpretation is that they were in search of someone with in the field experience rather than just a college graduate and a certification.

Interview Question – What were a few of the computer problems you had to work through in your experience back in 2009? How did you fix the problem? How would you rate the difficulty of the problem?   Answer Question

No Offer – Interviewed in Mayfield Heights, Cuyahoga, OH Aug 2011 – Reviewed Oct 14, 2011

Interview Details – After completing a short online basic skills test, I received an email that I was to be further considered for the position. It took two months and numerous email inquiries later in order to get a phone interview; of which I was never given a formal decision. Apparently the HR Representative couldn't even send a letter denying the position, which is just tacky.

Web Designer/Developer at Progressive Insurance

No Offer – Interviewed in Mayfield Heights, Cuyahoga, OH Nov 2010 – Reviewed Jan 18, 2011

Interview Details – Compared to other companies I've interview for, their process is very structured and difficult.

I had a 1-hour phone interview and three 1 hour interviews back-to-back at one of their locations. During all interviews the interviewer wrote my responses down in columns corresponding to the STAR format. Each question had to be answered by explaining a situation or task that relates to the questions followed by the action and the result. They seem to want answers that related to a single situation that you've experienced. After 4 hours of these types of questions all started to sound the same, and so did my answers. Coming up with unique situations makes their interviews difficult.

In the end I was not offered the job because I had more of a development background instead of a mix of design and development.

Interview Question – Explain a situation in which you had to complete a complex project or problem that you did not know how the solution for. How did you manage?   Answer Question

Interview Details – I worked with a recruiter who did an initial screening phone interview. After that, they scheduled a time for me to come and take an analyst IQ test, which consisted of a computer exam with 50 questions and 12 minutes to answer them. After passing that, I had a phone interview with the hiring manager, which focused on past work experiences. The next step would have been a face to face interview, but they offered the position to someone else before I had my face to face.

Senior Staffing & Efficiency Data Analyst at Progressive Insurance

Declined Offer – Interviewed in Mayfield Heights, Cuyahoga, OH Apr 2010 – Reviewed Apr 29, 2010

Interview Details – Progressive has a very well defined process they follow called "Targeted Selection". It is administered in a very consistent manner company wide, and is tailored for certain job categories. For the Data Analyst roles the process consists of:

1.) Phone screen with a corporate recruiter for about 1 hour.
2.) On-site Wonderlic test. 50 questions in 12 minutes, informal attire. It's pass / fail and you get immediate feedback.
3.) Phone screen with the hiring manager for about 1 hour.
4.) On-site interview with the hiring manager, two of his/her superiors, and two of your potential peers. 5 people in 4 one hour sessions. These interviews are a mix of:
a.) Skills assessment through case studies. Sample questions that gauge your technical ability to logically step through a problem and come to a solution.
b.) Behavioral / STAR questions that ask you to tell a story about a time you had a specific problem or situation and how you resolved it.

Each of my interviewers were very clear about stating what would happen during my hour with them, and stuck to what they said they would do. While the technical questions addressed your analytical or programming skills, they did so broadly, and not in a syntax specific sense. Most of the questions were geared towards ensuring an overall fit with the role and the company.

The upside to this process is that it was very objective. However, I felt the interview process allowed Progressive to do 80% of the questioning, and me only 20%. I did not feel I had time to have all my questions answered about the position offerred, and did not walk away with a completely clear understanding of what the role offerred would actually do. I feel this was somewhat due to not having experience in the insurance industry.

Overall the interview process was a very positive experience for me. The people I met with were very respectful and treated me with dignity. The Targeted Selection process that Progressive has developed is by far the most impressive interview process I have seen so far.

Interview Questions

  • Case study: Sales increased selling price on all items by 5%. There are 10 items, all with different selling prices. Gross revenue was $500,000 before the price increase, with an average selling price of $1. After the price increase Gross revenue was $505,000, with an average selling price of $0.95. Why hasn't the price increase had the desired impact of increasing revenue and average selling price?   View Answer

Reason for Declining – Salary was somewhat low and I did not see a long term fit for myself at the company.
