Software Development Engineer Interview

Software Development Engineer
Seattle, WA

I applied through a recruiter and the process took 4+ weeks - interviewed at RealNetworks in January 2014.

Interview Details – 1st group:
Open position for front end developer for RealPlayer Cloud group. Technologies used: Backbone.js, JQuery, Spring, HTML5
Phone interview - general questions about experience. Asked specifically about Spring experience.
In-person interview. Had 3 45min - hour long rounds:
First round: Print words from a sentence
2nd round: how do you implement exception handling in web applications. How do you implement pagination in websites.
3rd round: Jquery questions. How do you select all image tags in a web page. AJAX call using JQuery
They did not find me fit for their group but recommended another group which works on REST services.
Had phone interview with dev manager from 2nd group: questions asked were about experience, coding question about finding first repeating element in unsorted array. I gave 2 solutions, he asked me to do it in place. I could not come up with a solution for that. Few other questions about Java hashtable, hashmap, hashset. How is hashtable implemented internally in Java

Interview Question – Jquery whiteboard coding   Answer Question

Producer Interview

Producer

I applied through an employee referral and the process took 2+ weeks - interviewed at RealNetworks in May 2013.

Interview Details – I had a phone screen and then two follow-up phone interviews with a manager. I thought they all went well, but I was sent the kiss of death "thanks but no thanks" e-mail shortly after the last phone call. This sounds like an exciting team to work on and I'm well-qualified, so it made little sense to me. I was disappointed. I always am a bit bummed out when companies make their decisions based on so many phone interactions.

Interview Question – the only question I didn't love, was when I was asked in-depth about using a Windows phone. I have minimal experience with this OS so I could not give a lengthy response.   Answer Question

Accountant Interview

Accountant
Seattle, WA

I applied through a recruiter and the process took 6 days - interviewed at RealNetworks in January 2008.

Interview Details – Recruiter called me and did a phone screen. I came into Seattle HQ and met 3 people for ~30 minutes each. They didn't coordinate their questions much so it was pretty repetitive. They didn't ask any technical questions or test my skill-set but did ask me to tell them about prior accounting experience.

Interview Question – "Do you have a positive or negative impression of RealNetworks?" (Who asks if you have a negative view of their company?! ...should've been a clue the company has problems.)   Answer Question

Content Producer Interview

Content Producer
Reston, VA

I applied online and the process took a day - interviewed at RealNetworks in June 2010.

Interview Details – After applying for the job, I had a phone interview with one of the company's HR people. A couple days later I was interviewed again on the phone by someone at Real who I'd be directly working under and was invited for an official interview at the Reston office a week later.

During my official interview, I had four one-on-one interviews with people I'd be working with directly, each lasting approximately 20 minutes. Most of the interviews were focused on explaining the job position and

Interview Question – The most difficult question to answer was when I was asked how I handled a problem I had faced in a previous work environment. It took me a few seconds to identify one, simply because at my previous jobs, the work was so streamline, there weren't many issues.   View Answer

Senior Software Engineer Interview

Senior Software Engineer
Seattle, WA

I applied in-person and the process took a day - interviewed at RealNetworks in March 2011.

Interview Details – No wonder this company went through so many layoffs, the people there, the IT engineers, enjoy big offices and ask big open-ended questions, yet the better your answers the less likely you would be hired as the interviewers do not want someone more competitive than themselves.
