Interviewed Apr 2008 in Washington, DC (took 3 weeks)
45 minute phone interview with a college recruiter who received my application/resume that I submitted online. Questions were qualitative and involved giving examples of situations where you solved a problem or handled a difficult situation. Behavioral interview. I kept in touch via email after the interview and was accepted about a month later.

Interviewed May 2009 in Dallas, TX (took 3 months)
The initial interview was a 1:1 interview with the associate director where the responsibilities of the position were outlined and qualifications reviewed. Because the Dallas-area chapter is very strong in volunteer leadership, the next round of interviews involved a group interview where both staff and senior-level volunteers in my activity interviewed me, asking questions subjects like: how would I work with my volunteer partner to improve my area, how would I resolve a difference in opinion or a conflict with my volunteer partner, which of my skills were most suited for the position, and what my greatest weakness is. They also outlined the position's top priorities.
The hiring process in general is much slower than other organizations, but the work can be very rewarding. The range for the position's salary level was published to their web site, leaving little room for negotiation. Particularly in the case of their Disaster organization, they are very keen on seeing volunteer partners as equals, which might or might not be a bonus for an individual.

Interviewed Dec 2008 (took 1 week)
There was two interviews, one over the phone with HR, then you were asked to come in for an initial interview Basically they asked what you are looking for in a job, are you willing to travel, if you have customer service skills. They give you a good idea what the job is about. The person that interview me made me feel very comfortable and not a bit nervous.

Interviewed May 2009 in Farmington, CT (took 1 week)
The internship was listed on the Red Cross website; an email/call to the HR manager and I had a date for an interview. I interviewed with the HR manager, who basically just asked why I was interested in the position and told me about the organization and some specific things that were going on at the time. I also talked to the finance director (who I wound up working for). It was pretty simple, she just asked about some things on my resume and said a little about what the job would entail.
Granted, this was for an unpaid internship, so YMMV.

Interviewed Mar 2007 in Durham, NC (took a day)
This job was brought to my attention by a fellow class mate who was quitting the organization. I submitted my resume in person at the Durham facility. I was called approximately two weeks later for an interview. The questions were focused on behavior. No questions were asked of my ability to comprehend or perform laboratory production procedures. If you have a solid academic background in science, can lift 50 lbs, and you are personable, you are a good fit for the organization.
