Interviewed Sep 2011 (took 2 days)
Rocket gaming has a skill test that is somewhat decent. If I compare it to the technical interviews I had with Amazon.com, or Microsoft, it is easier; but the strange thing about the test is that it is a take-home test and the time/resource limitations are self-imposed.
After I passed the first test, they asked me to go in for a face-to-face interview. The interview was targeted for two different roles. First, team lead and second, development manager. Some of the questions were technical, but the other ones were kind of vague questions about the role of the team lead or development manager.
Toward the end I asked the interviewers how long they have been with the company and one of the three was a recent hire (less than a month). Then I asked whether the company promotes from within and one of the team leads said that he was promoted from within as a developer to lead developer but management career path is different and not everyone wants to pursue it. This intrigued me as to why they have so many technical tests and questions if management is a different career path and it requires different skill-set.
Then, I asked whether the company is trigger-happy -- exact phrase was whether there is a lot of hire and fire within the ranks -- and the other two said: "not more than any other sector", while I noticed the new guy is nodding yes perhaps affirming the validity of the question.
Finally, the new guy said he's going to ask the higher management to come and see me, but then the other guy came back a short while later -- the third interviewer was on the phone and had already departed -- and said the higher management is in a meeting.
On the way to the elevator I asked one of the interviewers, who was a team lead at the time, whether one of the other team leads that I had known from the past is still with the company and he said: "he has moved on".
Considering their reputation, I am a bit baffled by what this company is actually looking for. Whatever they happen to look for, they might be looking for some aspects of you other than just merits -- if you know what I mean. Also, I have serious doubt whether this a stable or desirable place to work.
