Application Details

I applied online. The process took 2+ weeksinterviewed at Scheels.

Interview Details

Applied online on a Tuesday. The online application consisted of basic info, work history, references, and about 6 basic questions about yourself. I included my resume and cover letter on the application. I received a call on that Friday which was a random phone interview/screen which asked basic work history question and some easy interview questions (Biggest weakness). They told me to come in for an in-person interview the next Wednesday. The first in-person interview was with a HR hiring manager and was about an hour. It was a pretty laid back interview which included a lot of questions about customer service and sales experience. After the interview I took an aptitude test which took me 45 mins to complete. It included spelling correction, grammar correction, simple sales math, writing a business letter, some questions about yourself, questions about products in the store, and then asked you to define about 8 works in relation to a retail business. If you graduated high school then you can easily pass this test so don't stress about it. The following Tuesday I got a call to come in on the next Friday for another interview with a assistant store leader. The second interview was just about getting to know me as a person and see if I would fit in with the staff there. The interviewer was very laid back. After that I took a drug test (oral swab), and about 2 days later I got a call saying they wanted to offer me the job. Dress nice (slacks and a dress shirt, clean shaven) and make sure you have a bunch of questions to ask because they seemed to like that a lot. Do background research on Scheels and their core values and be ready to talk about sports/outdoor activities. If you are prepared, honest, and genuine than thats the best you can do. They really look for people who will fit in with the Scheels culture.

The people were very friendly and made you feel comfortable/welcome. A big downside is that there are two paper applications and the second one was very, very long. (Took over an hour to fill out.) They also do multiple interviews (2 or 3 usually) so the entire hiring process is very long and dragged out. However, I noticed that the interviewers asked similar questions but worded differently--I guess to see if you are giving them honest answers.

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 6 weeksinterviewed at Scheels in February 2012.

    Interview Details

You'll be asked to do a quick pre-interview when you drop off your application. Be dressed reasonably nicely (nice jeans and a clean, nice looking shirt would suffice). A manager will pull you aside and ask questions (try to remember their name, you'll want it later). They'll ask what you're doing now, what department you're interested in working (varies store to store, but generally softlines = clothes, midlines = general sporting goods [basketball hoops, snowboards, sometimes golf equipment, etc], hardlines = guns for sales positions). They'll ask what hours you can work, and if you can't work weekends don't even bother applying.
If you pass through that, you can expect a call within about a week to set up an interview. If they don't call you within about 10 days, call the store and ask to speak with a manager (preferrably the one you spoke to initially) and ask about setting up an interview. After that, you'll have anywhere from 2 to 4 interviews.
The first will be some general testing (math skills, reading and comprehension, a drug test). If they're happy with you after that, you'll go to a second interview with a manager who will just try to get to know you. Its fairly casual, but be sure to dress nicely for these interviews (dress shirt and tie and khakis would be fine).
If you've made it this far, you'll be hearing back from a manager sometime soon who will want to schedule training.

Can be a lengthy process. Pick up the application (important) if you know someone write their name on the top of the application! They like to have people referred. If not referred, you can STILL get a job. There is a long application and then an interview with a manager.

Completed in-store application and handed it in to a manager. I was asked why I was interested in working with Scheels. I then took a knowledge test over math, store products, and writing skills. Received a phone call within a week. Scheels does 2 interview process but I had one interview due to them being busy.
