Interviewed Apr 2008 (took 2 days)
Interviewed as an experienced hire, I got the interview through a recruiting agency. First phone interview with hiring manager, went through previous experience and some behavioral questions. Good connection, he ended the conversation giving me some tips for the next round.
2nd round I was flown into The Hague and participated in an individual assessment which consisted of a case scenario which I had 2 hours to prepare and a presentation of 10 mins based on a general business strategic recommendation. Next was another phone interview (in the office) with HR, again mainly behavioral.
I was exhausted after an entire day interviewing, doing the assessment, etc but worthwhile.
I had applied as a graduate earlier and found the recruiting process for experienced hires much more logical as you're basically assessed as an individual competing for a specific role, not one in a bunch.
Advice is document yourself extensively on Shell and on the hard and soft skills required and map them to your previous experience, in detail.

Interviewed Jul 2010 in The Hague (Netherlands) (took 2 months)
Initial contact with the company was positive and the HR office seemed very organized and rapid to respond. Following a few emails I was scheduled for a straightforward competency based telephone interview where you get to show how you satisfy Shell's CAR (Competency, Achievement and Relationship) criteria. Successful completion of that meant I had to wait about 2 months for an Assessment Centre (SRD) to be scheduled. The assessment centre began with the task of preparing a case and you have 1 hour and 20 minutes to read over several documents and extract the important details. Strangely for a company that uses English as it's internal language you are penalized should you happen to be a native English speaker as you are only given 1 hour to prepare. The next task is a group one where each candidate is given a different role and you have to come to an agreement on how to allocate funds. The final part of the day requires you to prepare a mini case for a given business problem and during the same session another brief competency based interview is conducted. All in all the atmosphere throughout was nice and you are never made feel that you are competing with the other candidates.

Interviewed Sep 2010 in Ann Arbor, MI (took a day)
I applied online and was offered an interview when shell came to recruit on campus. Half of the interview consisted of behavioral questions. The other half you chose topics such as research and development. You pretended you owned a company and you answered question relating to the topic. I would say they have an amazing management structure since it is less Hierarchal than other companies. Be able to analyze your problem solving skills, communication skills, and leadership skills, based on your experiences.

Interviewed Mar 2010 in Stavanger (Norway) (took 5 months)
Applied on their webpage. Some weeks late got an email about phone interview.
The phone interview was 1hour; 30min behavioral question and 30min where you discuss a topic (you can choose from a list of 4 or 5 topics). I choose "standardizations", and discussed pros and cons.
Then I got an email about an assessment day. Here you are going to prepare a 15min presentation about your research or thesis. Its a on day interview and one information day. Shell cover flight and hotel. First day is a info session where you meet the other applicants. We where four in total, but you are not competing against each other (at least that is what they say?). At the evening two newly employed shell engineers take all applicants to a nice dinner. Next day starts with a test where two and two applicant go together in a group and shall decide how shell should spend money in a country they are producing in order to benefit the society and shareholders of shell. It will be a simulate board meeting and press conference after wards. Then an individual test where you shall go through a lot of information(emails, lettter, newpaper articles, etc.) in order to get an overview of a situation in shell and decide the short, intermediate and long term plan for shell. You have to present this and answer questions afterward.
Then lunch, then your presentation for three senior technical employees which will ask you various questions about what your presenting.
Then they will call you the next day with the results.

Interviewed Oct 2009 (took a day)
I was away on the suggested day of their interview and they were unwilling to reschedule or to do a telephone interview. This shows how little future employees mean to them and that they are just trying to fill a quota by interviewing as many random people as possible. Many other companies are more than willing to reschedule or compromise interview dates.
