First you walk into a store, they usually tell you to apply online...this is a formality that all Starbucks now require. To help your chances, you can be friendly, "outgoing," order a simple drink i.e. latte/cappuccino (not some bullsht vanilla frappa triple non skim sugar fat craap), inquire about the coffee of the day etc.. make sure to ask for the manager and inform him/her that you will be applying online. Look good and don't be shy, make a good first impression. Leave your CV/resume with the manager even though you will be essentially resubmitting it online.
Now, for the online part. It consists of reposting everything on your resume, availability, etc... and a very long and exhausting personality test. This is only to screen you so your application can get through to the manager. No one wants serial killer pedophile psychopaths making their frappa crappa lattes. Answer it as you would any personality test. If you are shy, introverted, dishonest and lazy, you will probably convey that in your results, unless you're smart - be careful there are trick questions, repeated questions to make sure there's consistency etc... I suggest just answering the questions normally if you don't get the job screw it dunkin donuts will hire you in a second.
If you passed the screening the manager will see a couple of your answers and your availability, previous employment etc...he will by no means have a complete idea of who you are, so bring your CV and your best bullsht and behavior to the interview. The managers usually follow a preset list of questions in some strange logical progression. They are atypical but understandable. As an international brand and chain there has to be some type of standardization. The manager will usually hire on gut feeling, along with satisfactory answers to the questions. Look good, as usual, smile, be friendly, easygoing, but don't look like an idiot. Don't suck up, don't have brainfarts and don't EVER mention past errors. They want to know the mistakes you made and how you handled them. There HAS to be a happy ending to all these stories or else you will be giving yourself a happy ending thinking about the job you could have gotten if you weren't so dumb.
OK, so you've got the gist, now for questions: Why Starbucks? Mention a time you were given a negative criticism and how you handled that, changed your behavior as a result etc..., Mention a time you had to plan and organize something, a big project etc.. and how you handled that, When you're new to a job, how do you communicate, reach out to other people, fit in, get to know them etc..., Mention a time you did something wrong and how you handled the aftermath of your error, Mention a time where you were asked something and didn't know the answer and how you handled that situation, and of course, tell me about yourself...the manager will ask a couple of questions about your school, your interests, activities, work ethic...why you are the way you are....All you have to do is convey to the manager that you are happy, friendly, good with customer service (very personable), but also work hard, won't be late or call in sick, and work well in a team. You have to appear mature, confident and knowledgeable. This is sound advice for any job, so the same applies here.
Personally, I think it's a load of bullsh*t that you have to go through all this just to serve coffee - I mean as long as you're not some cave animal that has never spoken to a human being before you should be fine - but these days it is what it is. Don't be stupid, you'll get the job.

I applied online through the website, had to answer a 45 minute situation based questionaire (questions regarding conflict resolution, team work, customer service)
Got a call the next day to come to the store for an interview
Went to the store for a behavioural took about 1 hour and 20 minutes then had a second interview at another store for 20 minutes and then got a call with the job offer
For a barista position the interview process was very lengthy and complex. Similar to what you would expect at a large company.

At first I had a phone interview. The manager asked me why I wanted to work at Starbucks, an example of a time where I provided exceptional customer service, and what my goals in life were. The phone interview went well so she asked me to come in for an interview the next day. There were typical questions, like what I think good customer service is, and she also told me about company background and what my duties would be. I thought it went well and she said she would call me that night for a second interview. A week later I never heard back, so I followed up and they said things were busy and they would call early the next week. It's been two weeks and I still haven't heard back yet.

Really positive upbeat people. Social and happy. Spoke on the phone to get the interview set up. Met in the store, first with the Assistant Manager and did a standard, short behavioral interview. Then met the Manager a few days later and just answered questions. Be positive and clear about why you want the position. They were very willing to work with my availability and even that it may change in the near future. Great company, great people.

I applied online and it took me a good 45 minutes to finish the process. I got a phone call from the manager the next day for an interview. Interview was informal, very easy. I was asked 6 questions regarding my past experience and how did i cope with some conflicts and what was the outcome. Pretty straightforward. I got a phone call next day for a second interview. Pretty similar to the first one.

It was a hiring fair, so first i was interviewed by one person - she asked some basic questions as well as some behavioural ones (tell me about a time when... what happened? what was the outcome, etc.). then i moved on to another manager who went more indepth with the behavioural/situational questions... it took about 30 minutes with this manager. she didn't seem to be particularly invested in the interview (kept glancing around a lot). in the end she said that she would give me a call by the end of the week... she never did, so i called to follow up and a person there said that they had already found someone.

There was an ad on a local classifieds website (Kijiji) saying that they were looking for baristas. I called the manager, and asked if the position was still available. He asked a few easy questions (''Do you know Starbucks?'') and told me to come in the next day for a 1:1 interview.
Since he didn't specify an hour, I got there early, to make a good impression. I was there at ten o'clock. I asked one of the baristas if the manager was there, and she told me that he usually starts at 10:30-11:00. She offered me a free beverage, but I declined politely. (I don't drink or eat when I'm nervous...)
I waited outside the restaurant for the manager, and when he got there, he asked me if I was there for an interview. (I thought he was a customer, since he wasn't wearing his uniform, so I had told him to go ahead, that I wasn't waiting in the line-up.) He asked me to go wait for him at one of the tables while he'd go drop off his things.
The questions were very basic, he was obviously improvising. He was very nice, which allowed me to be a lot less stressed than I usually am in an interview. It consisted mostly of a conversation about the company and how they work.
At the end, he said that he was definitively VERY interested in my application and that f he couldn't find me a job at his store, that he would call other managers to refer me. He told me that if he hasn't called back by Tuesday (we're Friday today) to get back to him.
In the end, he offered me a free Frapuccino. I wasn't too sure, but he insisted, and I ended up trying the new Moka Frapuccino.

After filling out the application, the store manager reviewed and asked some pretty basic questions. Do you have experience handling money? They were looking for experience and the right personality for the position. The interview was right in the store and fairly informal. The culture of the workplace is very structured and motivational - I guess the corporate structure that the company wants. They are definately looking for outgoing and cheerful people. It is definitely important to show this kind of personality during the interview. They also want someone who learns quickly.
