Difficult Interview
Overall Positive Experience Received and Accepted Offer

Interviewed Jan 2010 (took 1 week)

Applied on-line in evening. recieved standard e-mail from company stating they get hundreds of replies. Following day received phone call from recruiter to set up a phone interview. Had an hour long phone interview within two days. Recruiter was extremely friendly and helpful. Asked mostly situational questions and how I dealt with them. Background on previous/current jobs. At the end of the interview I was told I was being reccomended for the next level. She e-mailed me company info and called me back the next day with a date and location of my panel interview. It took place at the company offices in a nearby city. Two district managers would interview me.

I spent the next few days preparing by researching everything I could find about the company. I found alot from many sources through searches. I dressed professionally, showed up a tad early and sold myself. I came extremely prepared, with resumes, letters of reccomendation, references, and any information they may need. I was pleasantly surprised at their friendliness work when the and genuine passion for their jobs. I was asked why Starbucks, and many situational questions. Different ones from the recruiter.

At the end of the interview I was told that the next step the recruiter would contact me.

The recruiter contacted me the next morning to ask how the interview went. While on the phone with me she recieved the e-mail from the DM's about the interview. She said they definatelly wanted me and would send a background check via e-mail. It was Friday so I quickly filled it out and e-mailed it back. Monday morning I was at work when the background check company called. Tuesday morning they e-mailed to have me fax my signature for an educational institute check. Thursday morning I recieved my offer for employment.

This was a very quick process and everyone was very supportive. You can tell the company puts employees first, they all really love their jobs.

Overall Neutral Experience Interviewed and No Offer

Interviewed Jan 2010 in San Francisco, CA (took a day)

I arrived on time and met with the manager who was cheerful and presentable. She asked me about my work experience - none of it in a restaurant environment, unfortunately. I explained my desire to change careers from my prior mortgage loan monkey job to one with potential growth. I know. It sounded lame even as I was saying it.

Interviewed Jan 2010 in Honolulu, HI (took 2 days)

Walked in on Tuesday with paper application. Got a call two hours later asking to schedule an interview. Friday worked best for both myself and the Store Manager. Was Invited to return for second interview with Assistant Manager on Saturday. Was offered job on the spot.

I am a former Starbucks employee and perhaps that contributed to the quick application process.

Store Manager at Starbucks

Average Interview
Overall Positive Experience Received and Accepted Offer

Interviewed Jan 2010 in Denver, CO (took 2 days)

I was contacted by a recruiter via email, who asked me to apply for an opening for SM in the area. I went online, applied, and then proceeded to take an online skills assessment. The test took an hour, and was interactive and informative about the Starbucks culture. I was contacted by the recruiter, who offered me an interview at a Recruiting event the following week.

I interviewed with one District Manager, and then I did a panel interview with two other DM's.These interviews were behavioral in nature, and I was experienced in handling the questions / scenarios. Everyone I met was extremely enthusiastic, genuine, caring, and supportive of the Starbucks culture. The interviews took about 1.5 hours. I was told that they would let me know the following week.

Two days later, I was contacted via email to submit information for a background check. I was contacted by the recruiter three days later and offered a position the following day. The recruiter did a great job explaining the benefits of being a Starbucks partner and provided a compelling case for an Assistant Store Manager position. Although this was not the position I interviewed for, I felt like it would provide me with ample training to learn about the company from within. They are very interested in upward mobility, and I can appreciate that.

Very Easy Interview
Overall Positive Experience Received and Accepted Offer

Interviewed Sep 2008 (took 2 days)

I talked to the supervisor in the lobby, one on one. He asked me about my previous experience, which at the time was none and he said that perfectly fine. He said he preferred that way, so that I started with a clean slate as far as having a job went. He asked me if I was comfortable dealing with people on a daily basis and basically just asked questions about myself. After that was over, he told me to come in the next day and have another interview with the other supervisor. It was more of the same thing, except she asked about my availability. Then she told me to come in the next day to start my barista certification process and start learning.

Shift Supervisor at Starbucks

Easy Interview
Overall Positive Experience Received and Accepted Offer

Interviewed Apr 2009 in Austin, TX (took 2 weeks)

I sat down with my current store manager and reviewed my performance as a barista. He then asked me a series of question to see how i would handle certain situations. He also asked me question about times i had made mistakes and learned from them. He also asked me how i have grown in the last year. After I interviewed with him, i had a sit down with my district manager to discuss what I could bring to the management table and how i could improve our store. As long as you stay positive, it's pretty hard to do poorly on the interviews.

Easy Interview
Overall Negative Experience Received and Accepted Offer

Interviewed Nov 2009 in Denver, CO (took 3 days)

Interviewed twice for one store-at the interview first met with the store general manager and then met with a shift supervisor. I was then "recommended" to another store as they needed more workers quickly due to a large number of employees quitting. This interview and store were unprofessional, quick, was given little to know information about the company, my salary, my job requirements or my schedule.

Shift Supervisor at Starbucks

Easy Interview
Overall Neutral Experience Received and Accepted Offer

Interviewed May 2008 in Austin, TX (took a day)

I was already working as a barista, and I was interviewing for a promotion. I sat down with another store manager other than my own that asked me the usual questions. ie: how would you handle a stressful situation? Tell me about about a time that you needed to make a quick decision without consulting a supervisor or manual? They were all very basic question, and if you have any work experience at all, it shouldn't be too difficult.

Interview Questions

How have you grown over the past year?

Starbucks Store Manager at Starbucks

Posted Dec 26, 2009

3.0
Average Interview
Overall Negative Experience Interviewed and No Offer

Interviewed Dec 2009 in Boston, MA (took 6+ weeks)

I applied for a Store Manager position in the Boston area. I was contacted by a recruiter in Texas a few weeks after I completed the online application and skills test. The skills test is fairly new, I think. It took about an hour and was a mix of mathematical questions related to a P&L report, situational questions, personality questions, and information about the company. The recruited set up a phone interview with me. He asked me general questions, as well as several behavioral questions, and it took about 30 or more minutes. I also had to turn in a completed associate (peer) referral form, but to my knowledge Starbucks never contacted any of the people on my list. The phone interview went pretty well, and about a week later the recruiter requested that I interview with a District Manager in the Starbucks HQ near Boston. I interviewed with a DM and Boston Store Manager. The in-person interview took about 40 minutes and was strictly behavioral questions. I found it odd that neither person asked me anything about me personally, although they did ask, "Why Starbucks?" I had just moved to the area from Seattle and thought that might be a point of conversation. I have been on the giving end of a behavioral interview many times and find that to make it a normal process, you have to ask some non-BI questions. I admit that I'm not 100% stellar on BIs, and even could not come up with an example for one question, but I have successfully gotten positions that use BIs in the past. The DM came across as cold and unengaged, but I'm sure it's just the BI format. About a week later, the recruiter in Texas phoned to say that they had a new position in Auburn, and wanted me to interview with the District Manager for that area. I explained that I am looking for work in the Boston area, and that Auburn is about 40-50 miles west of there. I asked if there was anything in Boston and he told me that he would check again with that DM and get back to me. He has never gotten back to me. Here's the time line:
10/27 - applied online
11/11 or 11/13 - Recruiter contacted me via email
11/17 - Phone interview
11/20 - Recruiter emails me to say they want to set up an in-person interview for week after Thanksgiving
12/01 - I contact recruiter regarding in-person interview as he hadn't contacted me, we set up date
12/08 - In-person interview
12/11 - Call from recruiter regarding position in Auburn
I am rating this a negative experience only because of the lack of follow through. I understand that everyone is getting inundated with applications, but if you have met already done a phone and in-person interview, I would expect them to at least call and say, "No, we have no positions in Boston for you." Also, the whole process seemed very long and strung out.
