    Difficult Interview

    Application

I applied online. The process took 3 weeksinterviewed at State of New Mexico (Santa Fe, NM).

    Interview

There was a three person interview panel comprised of the only two people to have ever held that position before plus a person from another program within the department. All three interviewers had the same list of pre-printed questions from which they took turns asking. Each interviewer took notes on each answer I gave and graded me. The notes and grades were then compiled after the interview and compared to similar ones for other interviewees. The interview team them put together a final recommendation for the cabinet secretary who performed a follow up interview to confirm the final choice.

    Interview Questions

    • Since this was my last interview with the state and was nearly 12 years ago, I don't remember this kind of detail. I was asked about my experience in facilitating the interaction of largely diverse groups with conflicting opinions, experience with policy analysis and recommendation, my writing skills, and my financial management skills. Overall, it was an amazingly positive experience.   1 Answer

    Negotiation

They offered a salary below what I expected, but I accepted because I really wanted the job. I think that I should have asked for more, but I will never know if holding out would have lost me the offer.
