Interviewed Apr 2011 in Powder Springs, GA (took a day)
Unemployment in Ga is hovering over 10% so needless to say I was very excited to land an interview. I was laid off along with several other employees from another bank who was going through financial reorganization. I applied on SunTrust website and was fortunate to receive an invitation for a phone interview. I was even more excited to land a face to face interview.
I interviewed with the Br. Manager and the Regional Manager. The interview appears to be going well until the Br. Manager asked the Regional Manager if he had any questions for me. The Regional Manager first question was in a very accusatory tone he asked me “Companies do not lay-off their best employees why were you laid-off”. He followed that question with another unbelievable question he asked “with a strong resume as yours why are you applying for a job like this”. I felt like he has no idea what is going on in the job market. Then he said to me I have seen many candidates with similar background to yours fail at this job because they only take the job to get into the company. He said the company policy sates you must remain in a position for a year before a transfer will be approved. He also said to me that I will hate coming to work every day. He made a few more surprising statements which caught by surprise.
My advice for other candidate is, if you really want to work for Sun Trust in the NE region be prepared for all types of questions…even questions that appear to discredit you.

Interviewed May 2011 in Atlanta, GA (took 2 weeks)
I applied online to the suntrust website. I was contacted by a Suntrust recruiter two weeks later and asked to do a mini phone interview. The recruiter set up an interview for a week later. I interviewed with two Underwriting managers who are very bubbly. We had a great "conversation" about my skills and what I had to offer Suntrust.

Negotiation Details
Although I had experience I was offered a salary in the mid point of the pay range. I started to negotiate because of my experience but it was not worth a long back and forth situation. I accepted the offer at the mid point because I am excited about the opportunity.

Interviewed Jan 2011 in Atlanta, GA (took 2 days)
The company conducted an on-campus group interview. The recruiter notified me after my first interview saying that I had made it to the next round. The office seemed more laid back compared to the bigger banks. The three people interviewing me seemed to be from different business areas in the company, and they asked questions to determine if I was a good fit for their business area.

Interviewed Dec 2010 in Atlanta, GA (took 3+ weeks)
1:1 interview with 5 hiring managers. Had a lunch with direct hiring manager. The process was not like formal interview, but rather like chat. Didn't ask lots of my past experience, maybe because i am a new graduate. Was asked about some SAS code, including merging, set. Was asked how to develop a model.

Interviewed Sep 2008 in Atlanta, GA (took 3 days)
Met hiring manager at professional organization, member meeting. He was very friendly and professional. He asked me to send him my resume. He then conducted a 45 min phone interview. After the phone interview with him ( the hiring manager), he then set up 5 interviews with his peers and his boss. These were face to face interviews that took place over 2 days. The building was secured and one might easily get lost on the different elevators if not given good directions. The environment was typical bank (at least to me). Fairly conservative, not overly friendly, in the heart of downtown with spectacular views. The managers I met with were fairly easy to talk to and I felt they were all genuine with me. I met with the hiring manager officially, face to face and he told me how everyone liked me and he wanted to hire me but he had to come up with a salary figure that would be fair to me and the other project managers he had on staff. He and his HR rep strung me along for over a month. In the meantime, I took another job.
I don't know that this is typical of their hiring practices, but I was very disappointed as I felt I did well in the interviews and was told that I did well but it obviously was not a good match. Considering the problems banks have been having as of late, it is probably best that I did not get the job.
