Interviewed Nov 2011 in Greensboro, NC (took 2 days)
Syngenta came on campus, conducted an info session, and then held interviews the following day. A couple weeks later, I received a call inviting me to the final round at their assessment center in Greensborough, NC. They held the assessment center in a nice hotel where 9 candidates and about 14 assessors spent two days. The first day was a welcome brief and team exercise followed by dinner with the assessors, all of whom were senior members of the company from around the globe. The next morning we started with another group exercise, followed by a series of interviews and business cases. Overall, it was a great experience and I felt like they took the time to learn as much as they could about each candidate.

Interviewed Sep 2011 (took 3 months)
Applied online.
Got a response within a week inviting me to a phone interview which took an hour. Quite detailed but went ok, going through the job description and the CV. Invited to an on site interview afterwards, which they paid all the expenses for.
The on site interview process was well organised with multiple 1:1 interviewers and 6 hours of meetings.
What had been up to that point a coherent process really did fall apart at this stage, when it became quite clear that none of the interviewers had any real expertise in the skills of the role they were interviewing for - they even stated this was why they were recruiting - to fill the serious gap in the company knowledge and expertise. Expertise in a field must be assessed by other experts, this did not happen.
Syngenta is a great organisation elsewhere but they fell down here. The excessive number of interviewers and rejection of all candidates so far after 5 months indicates that the organisation has lost its nerve, knowing it needs new expertise and thinking but is unwilling to either assess such candidates properly or embrace the cultural change required to avoid repeating previous failures.

Interviewed Feb 2009 (took 2 days)
A group of candidates was present. We visited the company, then had dinner with the interviewers. The next day we had 4 interviews : human resources with personality test, technical interview and two interviews consisting of giving examples of different situations : team work, creativity, establishing a strategy. The interview was only giving examples and was not very interactive.

Interviewed Aug 2009 in Greensboro, NC (took 2 weeks)
Met with 3 individuals within the department. One was upper level manager, One was direct boss, One was the Human Resources person. Thought that it was a fair process. They seem to be laid back, but also seem to have a strong work ethic.

Interviewed Oct 2010 in Saint Gabriel, LA (took a day)
I was contacted by an engineering firm in Mobil, AL, about an opportunity at Sygenta. The engineering firm set up the interview with their client (Syngenta). I was told that there were four interviews (includinig me) conducted. The panel consisted of the engineering firm representative, the department manager, two of the buyers in the department and a buyer that was retiring whose position they were interviewing for. Although the interview went well, they were looking for candidates with SAP experience (which I did not have).

Received and Declined Offer

Interviewed Dec 2009 (took 3 months)
Slow deliberate offputting process. Caused me to lift my compensation requirements as I could imagine what the post hire HR process would be like... slow, deliberate and unsatisfying. Difficult to imagine why this outcome was approved and endorsed by management when the competition in Syngenta's space is fierce and getting fiercer.
In addition, the company is highly profitable. In the interviews this was trotted out numerous times as an incentive for me to join. Without more sharing of those profits talent motivated by a more direct connection between perfomance and compensation will continue to decline to join the firm.
Interview Questions
Reason for Declining
Compensation did not include a long term component. and short term cash bonus component was nowhere near enough to motivate to excel.
