I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at The Gladstone Institutes (San Francisco, CA) in August 2015.
First a phone interview with the Manager...standard questions, but allowed enough free-form dialog for me to explain how my experience was relevant (was not coming from a health-focused research background). Follow-up was within a few hours, setting up an in-person interview with the Manager and Director...this interview had no standard questions but was very informal, more of a get-to-know-you conversation. Then a short interview with the HR staff. I very much liked all the staff I met, and felt they made the interview process as efficient and respectful as possible.

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at The Gladstone Institutes.
A phone interview was set up by HR the hiring manager. The phone interview was scheduled for 30 minutes and lasted about 45. Next HR called to ask me to come in. I spent an hour being interviewed by the manager and three staff members. The questions weren't really hard. It really focused on my expertise.
- Would you really be willing to put stamps on envelopes? I think they were trying to figure out if the job was below me. 1 Answer
I was able to negotiate a salary higher than what they were offering. The HR person had to go back to the hiring manager and get the okay. But they did it.
