Interview Question for Software Developer at Bloomberg L.P.:

There are 25 horses, and each runs at different constant speeds. If you want to find the 5 fastest horses, what is the minimum number of races needed, if each race can have five horses at most?

that wouldnt work, because you could have, for example the following break down of 1st and 2nd places per race:
race 1: 1:32, 1:44
race 2: 1:45, 1: 54
race 3: 1:21, 1:33
race 4: 1:25, 1:34
race 5: 1:54, 2:02
Cesar's method would give the 5 fastest horses to be: 1:21, 1:25, 1:32, 1:45, 1:54
when the 5 fastest horses in this example would be: 1:21, 1:25, 1:32, 1:33, 1:34.
race 1: 1:32, 1:44
race 2: 1:45, 1: 54
race 3: 1:21, 1:33
race 4: 1:25, 1:34
race 5: 1:54, 2:02
Cesar's method would give the 5 fastest horses to be: 1:21, 1:25, 1:32, 1:45, 1:54
when the 5 fastest horses in this example would be: 1:21, 1:25, 1:32, 1:33, 1:34.

In my opinion, because all the horse have different CONSTANT speeds (which means they always have the same speed on every races), so we can estimate their speed by some calculation (we can know the time and the total distance of the race). Then the 5 fastest horse can be decided by their speeds. Take only 5 races for 25 horses

i hardly think it'd be that simple... most likely you won't get a stopwatch for timing the horses, so you'd only find out relative speeds from racing the horses against each other... I found a pretty good solution here: http://blog.dnickolas.com/2011/04/25-horses-5-lanes-no-clock-top-5-not-3.html
