You are required to get a an IRS Preparer Tax Identification Numbers (PTINs). You have to earn a certain amount of credits every year, and you will be required by the IRS to take the RTPT by the end of 2014. It's an exam administered through Prometrics and you have to schedule an appointment and pay a fee for the exam. I heard it if very hard and it encompass IRS Publication 17 which is over 200 pages in length and quite a bit of the IRS Publication 4687-Due Diligence. You are not allowed a calculator, and you are constantly monitored. If you fail, you have to pay again. You will not be able to perform as a Tax Consultant unless you pass the exam and keep up on your required credits, be very knowledgeable of all the the rules, new rules, changing rules, regulations, new regulations, changing regulations that are imposed and implemented every year by the IRS. What is comes down to is that you have a lot of responsibility towards the client, and it is pertinent to always be professional and use due diligence.
