Interviewed Jun 2011 (took a day)
The interview lasted 24 minutes and ended very badly. I was not expecting a technical interview; I was expecting a more general and recruiter kind of talk. The interviewer asked me about SQL syntax, which I felt was not a good estimate of my programming skills. The second part, OOP design, was very difficult: implement a version control system. I totally blew this problem because I was overwhelmed by the complexity of a VCS (I use Git, so I was thinking about Git the entire time), and was not able to focus on the bare minimum components that made a VCS work. There were few hints. The questions were harder than my Google interview questions. I consider them very difficult for the entry level job I intend to interview for. Maybe there are people fresh out of college capable of answering those questions, but they certainly will not end up being at TripAdviser.

Interviewed Mar 2011 in Newton, MA (took a day)
I landed the interview through a recruiter. Had to complete an online tech test first, which was presented to me during the day and was told I needed to get it done as quickly as I could. I hurried through it during the course of my work day and submitted. Got word back from recruiter same day that they wanted to see me in person ASAP. After hurrying through the test, it took about a week for them to even suggest dates for on site interview. I was not given a schedule nor a contact name. When I arrived on site, there was no one at the front desk. I did as the sign suggested and called to two names listed, no answer. Someone finally came out and was able to assist me. I waited well past our agreed upon meeting time. HR rep met me and brought me to a meeting room where all interviews were to take place. Was advised that I would most likely interview with 4 people, but this was not given with certainty, names, or positions. 1st interview went well (at least I thought so). 2nd not so great. The person with whom I met was visibly disinterested in our discussion from the get-go. There was a run of tricky questions, one of which I know I didn't get correct. Then on to some hands-on troubleshooting. This is where things got even worse. I was asked to resolve a set of issues, conducting myself as if this was a live situation. At many points, I found the interviewer rolling eyes and sighing aloud, as I was explaining the situation, again, like I was dealing with a real end user. My approach was also interrupted numerous times wherein I was told not to do something, even though those actions would be, again, steps taken in a real-world situation. At this point it was unclear as to how I should proceed. What was clear is that the interviewer wanted me to do things a certain way, his way. After that, the interviewer basically shut down and ended the interview. HR rep came to see me out. Even if I had passed the "test," I would not have felt comfortable working in an environment that is so visibly discomforting.

Interviewed Mar 2011 (took a day)
After an initial phone interview I was invited to come in for an in-person interview. I met with 4 people that day. Each person asked similar questions of varying difficulty. I was asked to solve specific problems on the white-board.

Interviewed Feb 2011 in Newton, MA (took 5 days)
My interview experience with TripAdvisor was hands down the worst interview experience I have ever had. I've spoken with others that have interviewed with them and I was probably an anomaly but for me the experience was very negative. I spoke with four different managers and all four interviews were technical in nature. There were no personality interviews asking what I have done or what I was looking for in the company. There was also no portion of the interview process that told me about the company or even gave me a tour around the office. It was basic "build a b-tree" type questions and that was it.
I should have known that it was going to be a bad day when I showed up and my name was misspelled on the folder they gave me. I was escorted to a small office for the interviews. In between interviews I had to sit there for about 20-30 minutes while I waited for the next interviewer. This happened between all four interviews. The HR rep occasionally stopped in and told me "we haven't forgotten about you". One interviewer was very disrespectful because he was playing on his iPhone while I was doing my technical exercises on the whiteboard. I also waited after the fourth interviewer for another half hour while I waited for the last interviewer who never showed up and I was told by the HR person that "he was too busy to do this" and that was it. The interview process started at 9:30 and ended at 4:00 and there was no break for lunch. I know companies don't have to provide lunch but you would think that they would at least give you a half hour to go out and grab a bite. Overall, it was a very disorganized and slightly disrespectful process and had a conveyor belt feel to it.
The technical interviews were very technical and in depth on par with Google or Microsoft. It was what you would expect from a tech start-up (i.e. not a reason for the negative review). Make sure you study up on trees and hash tables.

Interviewed Jan 2011 in Newton, MA (took 2 days)
6 hour interview process (including free lunch) meeting 1 on 1 with 5 different engineers, each covering work experience and presenting arbitrary puzzles that must be solved and at least partially coded on the whiteboard in the language of your choice. Heavy emphasis on Big O notation. Had to come in for a second in-person interview to separately test on CSS.

Interviewed Dec 2010 (took a day)
I received an email requesting a phone interview within a week of my application and scheduled a phone screening about one week later. From the moment I began the interview, the recruiter did not have a very nice attitude. She began to immediately fire off some very involved questions that seemed to be part of a script and were better suited for an in-person interview instead of a phone screening. For every response, she asked for more detail. I asked four or five questions about company initiatives, corporate culture, etc. The recruiter seemed put off by them and gave me sarcastic responses and then was negative about the fact that I had no further questions.

Interviewed Feb 2011 in Newton, MA (took 1 week)
I had one phone interview that involved coding up a binary search tree and implementing an insert() and findSumAtLevel(int n) routine. I then went into their Newton office where I was interviewed by three engineers. Questions focussed a lot on binary search trees (so study up on in-order-traversal and other related data structures and algorithms).

Interviewed Nov 2010 (took 2 weeks)
I applied online and heard from a recruiter within a few days looking to set up time for a phone interview. The recruiter who interviewed me seemed rather distracted and inattentive to our conversation. She also seemed to be reading off a script of questions rather than engaging with what I had to say. For example, in describing a previous internship experience I made it a point to discuss the heavy use of Excel and her next question was "Do you have any experience with Excel? How comfortable do you feel with the program?" I hung up feeling like the process wasn't going anywhere.
I was surprised to hear from the recruiter again a few days later asking me to complete an Excel exercise as the next step in the interview process. I spent several hours digging through the spreadsheet to distill insights/recommendations from all the data. I sent it back to the recruiter only never to hear back from her or anyone else again. I made several attempts to reach out and check on the status of my application but never received any response. The whole thing felt really unprofessional.

Interviewed Nov 2010 (took 2 weeks)
I applied for the role via online system. I was contacted within 2 days from the HR assistant to schedule a phone screen with recruiter. I spoke with the recruiter 4 days later. She had a great personality and gave me an understanding of the role and company. The interview was straight forward. She delved into my knowledge of social media and product management skills.
Even though I didn't get to interview for this role the recruiter was so helpful and polite I would still consider this a great interview. She had me laughing the entire time.

Interviewed Jan 2008 in Newton, MA (took 4 weeks)
Multiple rounds with many colleagues and managers. Prepare hard in advance! Research competitors and study the site! You'll be asked to do a "homework" assignment to show your chops - put in the effort because they will judge you hard on this. This scrutiny is indicative of what it's like to work there, but it's great if you're driven and up for the challenge.
