Interviewed Jun 2010 in Newton, MA (took 3 days)
Submitted resume on main site job board. Recevied email approximately 1 month later. Scheduled time for phone screen. Screener was very polite and had a good sense of humor. Questions were from a script. Each answer was audibly typed in as I talked. Questions were generally 'get to know' style and simple to answer.

Interviewed Jan 2010 in Newton, MA (took 7 weeks)
My interview process at TripAdvisor was thorough and efficient. I had several phone screens before I came into the company, so I had a very good sense of the role, expectations and company culture before I even met anyone. I was able to meet with everyone I'd interact with including the team I'd manage. HR was extremely responsive and timely, getting back to me with follow up and next steps with days. Everyone I met with was professional, bright and friendly. The culture can be described as friendly, creative and constantly looking to improve on every aspect of what they do.

Interviewed Jan 2010 in Newton, MA (took 3 months)
I first spoke to a recruiter at a university career fair. He was recruiting only for technical positions, but he offered to take my resume anyway and pass it on. I was contacted a few weeks later by HR to set up a phone interview. The phone interview consisted of a few basic background questions about my experience and relevant skills. I then received an analytical skills test via email, dealing with website data points such as clicks and impressions for various accounts. It was somewhat complex, but I completed it within a week. I was then contacted again and invited to a 2.5 hours panel interview. I met with 4 mid to senior level employees, each in a different marketing areas (e.g. SEO, site content, product management, partnerships). Each had previously worked with new hires in the position I was interviewing for, so they were able to answer any questions I had. Finally, I was invited one final time, and met with one senior employee. This was a short interview, about 30 minutes, during which I asked the majority of the questions. I was contacted about a week later with an offer, and given 5 days to make a decision. During that time, I spoke with two HR people about the specifics of the offer before I accepted.
Overall, it was a pleasant experience. Everyone who I met/spoke with was extremely nice and seemed to genuinely like working at TripAdvisor. I had no difficulty getting prompt responses via phone or email. Although the process in total was long (3+ months), there was little lag time between each individual portion of the interview process.
The only thing missing was maybe a quick tour of the office, which may be a selling point for potential hires. I did not see the whole complex, which I have heard is quite nice and has many unique amenities.

Interviewed Jan 2010 in Newton, MA (took 3 weeks)
I emailed my resume to a TripAdvisor technical recruiter near the end of December. I received a response less than a week later and went through 3 phone screens (2 of which were technical). I was asked questions pertaining to basic data structures and algorithms (hash tables, binary trees, sorting). I was then flown out to Boston for an on-site interview, which consisted of 5 1:1 technical interviews, then an HR interview. I was asked to implement common data structures/algorithms on the white board (BST insertion, search, bit vectors). The last technical interview focused on probability teasers. I was given an impromptu tour of the office as well. Overall, all of my interviewers were fairly knowledgeable and were generally easy to talk to. The office space was nice given it's many common rooms (some of which fully stocked with snacks and drinks), game room, and decent size cubicles.

Interviewed Dec 2009 in Newton, MA (took 4 weeks)
A technical recruiter found my resume on my website, contacted me and set up a phone screen for me. The phone screen lasted one hour, consisting of three algorithm questions, with difficulty level gradually increasing. Then I did two onsite interviews. The first on-site interview round consisted of six 1:1 interviews (five technical interview and one technical-recruiter interview); each lasted about 45 minutes. The second on-site interview round consisted of 3 technical interviews and following the technical interviews on that day I was made an offer.
For all the on-site technical interview questions, about 80% are algorithms/data structures (some interviewer gave a series of questions and asked me to code some of the algorithms I proposed; some interviewer gave one complex problem and asked me to design the algorithm and code); about 10% are OOP principles (e.g., when to use interface and when to use abstract class) and CS domain knowledge (e.g., how does insertion in B+ tree work); the rest are probability analysis and brain teasers. I was also asked to give suggestions to improve the functionalities of TripAdvisor website.
Technical-recruiter interviews are more like happy chatting, letting me know more about the company, than asking me to answer questions.
The people I interviewed with are intelligent and energetic. The work environment is great: spacious work space, huge computer display, free lunch, snackbar. There is chessboard, rockband, wii and ps3 in the entertainment area. They have shuttle buses to connect between the company and Newton Highlands T station.
Interview Questions
For example, the result of looking up "app" is {apple, applications, ...}
Constaints:
1. No duplicate returning value.
2. getRandom() will at most be invoked 100 million times.
Then optimize for space.

Interviewed Dec 2009 in Newton, MA (took 2 weeks)
My background, B.S. CS student studying at a top 20 university.
A college recruiter found my resume and made initial contact to see if I was interested in TripAdvisor. Being a fan of entrepreneurship and having heard of TripAdvisor as the originator of many Web2.0 concepts, I readily talked with them, going through on campus interviews and phone screens. This was followed by a flight out to Boston to interview on-site. The on-site was full day (9 to 4) and consisted of some pretty easy coding questions and even more questions about design and CS principles (design patterns, OO and interface vs. class, etc...). The white board coding questions when they popped up were not as difficult as say Microsoft or Google coding questions. There were plenty of design questions that didn't require coding but required careful thought with similar difficulty to a Microsoft or Google interview. There were also plenty of behavioral questions regarding my abilities to work in a team, communicate clearly and effectively, and determine my level of "individualism," a quality highly valued by TripAdvisor.
The company itself is good and seems to have a great engineering culture. The catered lunches, rockband+bigscreen, and snackbars are similar to what Google has and really speak volumes about how the company treats its employees. In terms of the people, I found each interviewer to be professional and intelligent.
I've been made an offer and am still waiting on other companies before making a decision.
