Interviewed Oct 2011 in Newton, MA (took 4+ weeks)
Had 1:1 interview with hr and hiring manager on the phone. Second round was at the Newton hq. Interviewed with hiring manager, a director, a vp, engineering director and a product manager. Talked about past experience and how to improve current product. Was prepared and gave very specific ideas a couple of which they were already working on. Thought the process went very well but got a standard rejection email from hr which was surprising. Asked both hr and hirkng manager for feedback and why they arrived at this decision but never heard back. Very rude and unprofessional.

Interviewed Nov 2010 (took 2 weeks)
I applied for the role via online system. I was contacted within 2 days from the HR assistant to schedule a phone screen with recruiter. I spoke with the recruiter 4 days later. She had a great personality and gave me an understanding of the role and company. The interview was straight forward. She delved into my knowledge of social media and product management skills.
Even though I didn't get to interview for this role the recruiter was so helpful and polite I would still consider this a great interview. She had me laughing the entire time.

Interviewed Jan 2008 in Newton, MA (took 4 weeks)
Multiple rounds with many colleagues and managers. Prepare hard in advance! Research competitors and study the site! You'll be asked to do a "homework" assignment to show your chops - put in the effort because they will judge you hard on this. This scrutiny is indicative of what it's like to work there, but it's great if you're driven and up for the challenge.

Interviewed Jun 2010 in Newton, MA (took 3 days)
Submitted resume on main site job board. Recevied email approximately 1 month later. Scheduled time for phone screen. Screener was very polite and had a good sense of humor. Questions were from a script. Each answer was audibly typed in as I talked. Questions were generally 'get to know' style and simple to answer.

Interviewed Feb 2010 in Boston, MA (took 4 weeks)
It was a very exhaustive interview process, starting with a phone interview with the recruiter and then a phone interview with a fellow Product Manager. They brought me to Boston and I had a set of 6 interviews the first time around with 2 Directors of Product and 1 engineer and 1 Director of engineering and 2 product managers. Then I had to wait to hear back from them on the results and after a week they called me and asked me whether I would be interested in doing a second set of interview. The HR contact was helpful but was not super responsive at times. I went there again and met with 2 VP's , my hiring manager, 2 engineers.
Once this was completed, it took some more time for them to get back to me and then when I thought I got the job, they told me that I need to complete a presentation. I wish they could have told this sooner, so that I could have completed during that week and not extend the process.
The interview process is very exhaustive and I thought I was being picked on...but once I joined the company I know how lucky I am as they are really really picky with the people they hire.
Everybody is super smart and all the people are metrics driven and very knowledgeable, so there is no BS'ing to any answers or experience.

Interviewed Feb 2009 in Needham, MA (took 4 days)
I applied online (TripAdvisor website) for a Product Manager position. I was contacted by phone approximately 1 week after submitting my application. The HR representative conducted a brief phone screening of me, after which she scheduled a phone interview for me and the hiring manager. We discussed salary, and right off the bat, I was made aware that the salary range was significantly less than what I was looking for.
I spoke with the hiring manager later that day. He conducted a fairly thorough screening, asking about my relevant experience at each position I had held. He also let me know that they would like to have me in for an interview and that there would be an assignment. There was a more senior position available (someone was leaving the team, who had a more senior role), so I asked him if I might be considered for that role, since it matched better with my experience level, and he said no, and "I had to earn it." He said that the HR rep would be in touch to schedule and in person interview and that there would be an assignment.
The HR rep reached out to me a couple of days later to schedule the interview and provide me with the assignment. The assignment was to develop a creative solution campaign for a potential advertiser that was launching a new airport terminal and wanted to advertise it on TripAdvisor. The interview was scheduled for approx. 1 week later. I reached out to the HR manager regarding my concern about the salary range and whether or not it was worthwhile to continue the interview process, she said that she thought we could find a solution that worked for everyone. So, I prepared the presentation, and went to the interview and presented it to the hiring manager. He seemed very impressed by the comprehensive solution I developed. I also met with three other junior members of the team. There was some concern expressed about the management style of the hiring manager, but overall it was a very positive experience and interview. The offices were nice, open and modern. One of the core values is "Speed Wins" (e.g. getting ideas to market quickly is important).
I followed up with thank you notes to each person I met with. Approximately one and a half weeks later, the HR rep contacted me to let me know they had decided to offer the position to another candidate who had more publishing experience. This seemed odd since I had worked at two publishing companies and a web publishing company. I think the fact that my required salary was out of their range probably affected my candidacy. The HR rep asked if she could contact me about other potential opportunities in the future, and I encouraged her to do so.
