Interview Details –
I went to interview for USPIRG, and the interviewer did not know anything about me. I don't think she received my resume, application, cover letter, or essay because she didn't ask me a single question during the interview that related to any of my experiences. She didn't ask for any of these materials at the beginning of the interview, so I assumed that she had them. As the interview progressed, however, it was clear that she didn't know me from a hole in the wall. Also, the interviewer didn't even know what job I was applying for (she only asked at the very tail end of the interview). As a result, the interviewer ended up asking me a lot of hypothetical-scenario questions that related to a job position that I was not seeking. They were questions I had not prepared for because the job I was applying for did not require experience as an organizer. THe job description only stated that applicants needed to be well versed on political issues and needed to have research experience. Added to this, the interview was conducted very unprofessionally. I was told when I walked in that if the interviewer liked my responses, I would be offered a position on the spot. Well, let's just say that the end of the interview was a bit of an awkward experience.
All in all, I'm glad I wasn't given an offer to work for USPIRG. They require you to work insane hours (50-80 hours a week) for garbage pay (21,500 a year after health insurance payment deductions). In addition, it seems that the organization is very disorganized, and after reading a few of the reports that they submitted to Congress, I was left with the impression that the reports were written by a bunch of underpaid, under-qualified, undergraduates (-: . All in all, I would suggest that you stay away from USPIRG; it's not worth the time, effot, or money to apply and to interview only to get slapped around by their incompetent and unprofessional "field office managers." Unless you want to spend the next two years of your life going door-to-door begging for people to give you donations to support the "grass roots," don't bother with USPIRG.

Interview Details – U.S. PIRG came to my campus for the career fair. I attended the info session. I signed up for an interview. The interviewer conducted a phone interview the following day. I was offered a second interview. I am scheduled to attend this second interview - that is suppose to take 6 hours (noon-6PM) - this weekend. I was doing research on what to expect and stumbled upon this site.

Declined Offer – Interviewed in Nov 2009 – Reviewed Jan 25, 2010
Interview Details – I had an on-campus interview with this organization, and a previous alum from my school interviewed me. She told me a bit about her experience with PIRG and it was pretty informal. She asked me many questions about my background and my passion for public interest work, and it was just a pretty basic first interview. There was nothing shocking there. I was invited back for a second interview (during the interview itself), but actually declined it because I realized I wasn't as interested in the organization and community organizing type positions.
