Interviewed Sep 2008 in Berkeley, CA (took 4+ weeks)
I applied, then someone contacted me by phone. I met initially with a small panel that consisted of the supervisor, another analyst of a slightly higher ranking than the position I was applying for, and another manager from a different dept. they asked about 10 questions. Interviewed Mar 2012 in Berkeley, CA (took a day)
I emailed the principal investigator about my interest in working in his lab.
I was asked to read three research publications before the interview.
The interview was not formal. I was asked questions to gauge my understanding of the papers and gauge my interest and prospect in the research focus of the lab.
The PI and other researchers were friendly, supportive, and helpful to me and my lab partner as we transitioned into working in the lab.
Working times are generally planned by each researcher based on his/her projects.

Interviewed Aug 2009 in Berkeley, CA (took 2 weeks)
It was pretty straightforward. I have an initial phone interview and after was scheduled for a face-to-face interview after a week. It was a panel interview consisting of the hiring manager, the incumbent and the HR representative. They asked mostly behavioural interviews. The panel was friendly and accomodating yet very professional.

UC Berkeley being a public university offers a very low salary but the benefits compensate it. You will generally have an idea how much you will be getting as it it published on their job website. At first I was offered a lower range so I negotiated and got the highest of the salary range.

Interviewed May 2010 in Berkeley, CA (took a day)
The interview was hosted in a UC Berkeley Meeting Room at the Martin Luther King Student Union building. It was a group panel as well as a group interview. There were approximately 3 to 4 interviewers and 4 to 5 interviewees. They asked typical questions regarding how one would interact in a setting with real students under different scenarios. One part of the interview also consisted of splitting into two groups to formulate and stimulate a pretend "class presentation" on how to eat healthy and discuss our reasons why our presentation would be effective or persuasive to primary or secondary school students.
Overall, the interview was more casual than business with a focus on how you handle classroom scenarios and your communication skills with younger people. If you have past experiences with young students in the past, I would highly recommend incorporating that into any part of the interview as it really does give the interviewee the advantage over others in the group.

Interviewed Sep 2010 in Berkeley, CA (took 1 week)
It really depends on each department. I applied online when I saw that a a research group needed help. They contacted me and I was interviewed one on one with the principal researcher. They asked me why I was interested in the research topic and how I could contributed to their group.

Interviewed Mar 2012 in Berkeley, CA (took 2 days)
The interview had very few technical questions. The panel of interviewers over the two days I interviewed seemed much more interested in my personality and how well I worked with others. They asked questions regarding how I dealt with and resolved conflict. I used specific examples rather than generic lines which seemed to go over well. They also made it a point to note that times at the UC have changed due to budget cuts but still felt it was a great place to work and wanted to see if I was interested in a long term career. I was glad they didn't ask silly off the wall questions like how many ping pong balls can I fit into a 747 as that doesn't seem to prove any level of job competence.

There did not seem to be much room for negotiation as I was competing against several others who all wanted the same job and would take it for less.

Interviewed Dec 2011 in Berkeley, CA (took a day)
I applied through UCB's online job site where I submitted a combined cover letter and resume. I was contacted by the hiring manager and scheduled an on campus interview--which I discovered was a panel interview upon arrival. I was asked a series of questions by three dept members.
Reason for Declining
Two members of the interviewing panel were too casual in the interview--they were not prepared. I discovered through the process of interviewing that the position had not been fulfilled because the duties seemed to be all-encompassing and not clearly defined. Also, the actual position was not on campus but offsite at a grant funded program hosted by UCB.

Interviewed Apr 2010 in Berkeley, CA (took a day)
First, I submitted my resume. Then the supervisor contacted me to send two references. After that, I got an email to schedule an interview with the supervisor and senior clerk. About a week later, I received my letter of offering for the position. At the interview, I felt the friendliness and welcoming attitude of the workforce.
