Interviewed Aug 2011 in Davis, CA (took 4 weeks)
The best way to get into the UC System is through their TES (Temp. Employment Services). Once in you have a better shot at a career position. It took over 24 applications while temping to get an interview. The whole process takes time -

Interviewed Oct 2011 in Davis, CA (took 2 days)
My survival advice for convention interviews is:
1. Be prepared. Be sure that you have researched the school so that you have ascertained their needs and can direct your remarks to what they appear to need. This includes knowing who's on the staff, who teaches what and how territorial the place is. You don't want to outline a course that someone else is already very invested in teaching. I prepare a cram sheet for each interview that records my research for the job, my analysis of their needs, and the anticipated questions I'll need to address. It also includes the questions I want to ask them.
2. Strike fast. Try to establish your candidacy in the first 5 minutes of the interview. The standard pieces of advice for business interviews apply here, too. Look people in the eye. Answer questions succinctly. Have ready good snappy short and medium length answers to the standard questions. DO NOT drone on for 15 minutes about the minutiae of your dissertation.
3. It's an old cliche, but try to relax and be yourself. Don't try to hide who you are. Be careful about creating different personas for different interviews at the convention. You will be seeing search committee members throughout the weekend and you need to remember who you are for each encounter. Believe in your skills and give it your best shot.
4. Dress distinctively (but don't violate too many conventions). After 2-3 days trapped in a hotel room interviewing, search committee members are completely fried or bored or both. It'll be hard to remember you if you looked and dressed like every other candidate.

Interviewed Apr 2011 in Davis, CA (took a day)
Came into professors office, no formal questions were asked. Chatted about myself and my knowledge of the markets. After showing I was a friendly, normal human, capable of conversing, and slightly educated, I was offered the position on the spot. Professor just wanted to make sure I could complete the research.

Negotiation Details
No negotiation, hourly rate is set. Varies depending on experience and there are different student rate levels, the position I was applying for was level four. Weekly hours vary depending on amount of research necessary but usually ranged from eight hours to 15 hours a week, and never more. Negotiation wasn't part of the equation, I accepted the position and was given a rate to be paid.

Interviewed Feb 2008 in Davis, CA (took 2+ weeks)
I had a detailed academic CV along with a research statement. We got a perfect match between me and the research group. I had only one phone interview, enough generic. There were 15 candidates for this position. They didn't ask for any recommendation letters.

Received an email to take a quiz regarding troubleshooting tech problems. If you passed the quiz, you would receive a 1:1 interview with an associate director, which was a little nerve racking at first but definitely ended on a good note.

Interviewed Jun 2008 in Davis, CA (took a day)
The interview process was quick, about 30mins. You get interviewed as group by all the managers in the company and they will all ask you one question. Most of the questions were basic simple questions about driving. Ex: what will you do if some one wants to get on the bus and wont pay the fare, what will you do if you made a wrong turn, etc

Interviewed Jan 2008 in Sacramento, CA (took 2 weeks)
Predefined questions (approved by HR) with little deviation from script. Standard questions akin to tell me your strengths and weaknesses, where do you see yourself in 5 years etc., however 2nd interview included several scenario-type questions such as "if you knew your employee was having personal problems, how would you help him/her?" and "your director tells you to transfer X $ into X account, but you believe this is not within policy, how do you proceed" and "you have become aware of a likely internal audit, how to do you proceed?". Plenty of time to ask questions during the interview and afterwards. Clearly a nonprofit environment (no such thing as merit increases in salary for more than 10 years now and no such thing as a promotion, instead you have to apply for another job or the higher job in the same department) and yet an employer with many opportunities.

Negotiation Details
Being hired from "the outside" is THE only way to come in at a salary less than the base - one can expect to come in at "midpoint" ONLY if from "the outside". Internal employees are almost always given only 5%, even if the position is several "levels" higher. An outside employee has more negotiating abilities than an internal employee seeking another job. Not much to negotiate beyond initial salary as benefits (excellent by the way) and things like vacation and such are fixed - one may be able to negotiate something like "travel money" for a conference and be sure to identify any planned vacations within the first 6 months otherwise no vacations for the first 6 months (probationary period).
