Interview Details – Interview process should have been my first warning, and last. Inexperience was evident. Bureaucratic mess of an interview. Typical questions about self and years of experience read from a script where they each took turns reading from the script. Be as detailed as possible when asked a question. No follow-up questions were offered. When nterviewed, give specifics and do not ramble.

Negotiation Details – Make sure that you negotiate a bump up in time and leave benefits similar to what you had in the previous position held.

Interview Details – Submitted my online application through USAJOBS.com prior to the closing date. Four weeks later, I received an e-mail stating that I was eligible and my application was referred to the selecting official. One week later, I was contacted for an interview by phone. The interview was 25 minutes long with performance based interview questions. It included a two-person panel with the potential supervisor and service chief. The questions, for this level (GS-5), weren't difficult. Similar questions included "What was a goal you had and how did you go about achieving that goal?" and "Rate yourself on the following skills: MS Office, computer troubleshooting, technology, communication, medical background." At the time, the culture seemed laid back, yet productivity-based. The employees I spoke with were generally content but expressed concern over the fact that the position was only 2-year term.
Following the interview, I was contacted two weeks later by phone and notified that I was selected for the position. In-processing took 4 weeks from the day of that phone call to my actual start date. Dealing with Human Resources for in-processing (employee paperwork, badge, security clearance, background check, etc.) was a disaster. They are slow to move and not fully competent. My opinion of the culture changed because there was a lack of communication, individuals who weren't aware of all the policies during hiring, and several HR specialists were rude or unhelpful. The entire hiring and interview process, from time of application to start date, was 3 months!

Negotiation Details – With the federal government, there is hardly any room for negotiation. However, I was able to get a large step increase based on my educational background. I spoke directly with the hiring manager and asked about a pay increase. She agreed and wrote a justification letter to human resources. HR reviewed my resume and transcripts and authorized a higher step. It actually was pretty easy for me since my education far exceeded the minimum requirements of the position. If your request is not justified, I wouldn't negotiate pay because it would simply delay your start date.

Interview Details – It took one month before I was interviewed & 2 months before I was hired. Be very careful whom you write in as a reference as the VA WILL call them!!! Make sure that you receive permission from your references first before noting them down. Also, regardless of what job you are interviewing for, dress conservatively as it leaves them with a better impression of you than if you were to appear in jeans.

Interview Details – Applied through USAjobs. Heard back a little over a month later to set up a phone interview with 4 HR and BME employees. Interview was somewhat difficult since most questions were multipart and no feedback was given. Interview questions were mostly from the sample questions section of the VA website and were related to whatever the duties of the engineer were going to be. It's been a month since my interview so I assume that they chose someone else, but you never know with government agencies.
