Interviewed Jan 2009 (took a day)
The interview process was short, 1 day to be exact. I met directly with the Director of FA who was very pleasant along with the other staff members in the FA department. Everyone was helpful and very friendly, definitely made you feel welcomed and at home. The 1:1 interview I had with the Director of FA lasted for 1 hour. She asked a series of questions regarding my work history, educational background, and previous experience. She made me feel very comfortable and relaxed. She seemed to be very engaged in what I had to say in which I appreciated very much since I was very nervous going in. She offered me the position right after the interview.

Interviewed Feb 2011 in Upland, CA (took a day)
My experience seemed to have started off on a good note and with nothing but enthusiasm...
I originally received a call from an administrative recruiter I guess. It is still not very clear who exactly this person was and the real nature of the position she held. She scheduled another phone call interview the very next day that I assumed was going to be about my work history, back ground education, and hands on experience. I was instead asked a short series of questions that only related in personal experience with working with someone.
Please describe a time in your career when you had a disagreement with a co-worker and how you resolved it...
Please describe a time in your career when you were unable to make a repair and how you handled it with a customer...
At no time or point in the interview was any of my technical expertise or training along with any reference to my resume even referred to or remarked on. Just to clarify, there was at no time any sort of APTITUDE test, summary, or evaluation given or offered. I was interviewed for what could be considered a technical position by a non industry educated individual who used a summarized version of a poor psychological questionnaire to make the decision of this type.
At the conclusion of the phone interview, I was told in almost this same verse... "WOW! You definitely have the PASSION and know how, and years of experience that we seek in our staff here at UTI."
I was told that my information gathered at the interview would be passed to someone in that department and be contacted again via telephone to continue with the interview process...
Two business days later I received a simple form letter that read EXACTLY the following...
"Thank you for taking the time to speak with me. At this time, we have decided to pursue other candidates whose qualifications more closely match those of the position. We encourage you to review other open positions at www.uti.edu. We wish you all the best in your career search."
I don't recall at any point during the interview where ANY of my attributes or skills that include, Research & Development, fabrication, working in Detroit with engineers and so on...
Somehow in 3-4 simple questions of almost non related useless information, someone who better fit the description and qualifications was chosen as a better match for the position...
Sadly UTI claims that 4 out of 5 of their students enjoys a career in the automotive field... it can easily be proven that this is not true since GM and Chrysler have laid off over 20,000 qualified and skilled technicians alone in just the last 2 years. Local and private shops are closing at an even higher rate daily and yet the schools continue to pump out students as fast as their money can be absorbed into the system. In fact, a couple of years ago, I thought about attending UTI to gain more education and certifications when I was greeted by an overly enthusiastic recruiter who claimed that as many as 9 of here students alone would be taking up full time work at a local high end dealership. How can you argue with that?!?!? Easy, I know the dealership well and have had a close working relationship with the not only the service manager, but several technicians there. Not only did they not have anyone currently working there from UTI, they did not have 9 new technicians starting work on the following Monday as stated... The recruiter declined to respond to any E-mails of calls after that...
As disappointing as the automotive industry has become, it's almost more disappointing to know that peoples lives, careers, and educations are now pre-screened to save the hassle of true experience or expertise ever becoming into question...

Interviewed Nov 2010 in Mooresville, NC (took 5 weeks)
Initially, I had a telephone interview with the Assistant Director of Admissions. It seemed to go well and we arranged a face- to-face. When I arrived, I was left waiting in the lobby until 30 minutes past the scheduled start time.... 45 minutes total. When the director, came out to greet me, she never acknowledged that I had been waiting (even though she obviously knew since 45 minutes had passed since the receptionist had called her to tell her I was there) or apologized for the wait. She proceeded to ask me the same exact series of questions she had asked me on the phone. These were terrible, contrived, "Interview-101" type questions. She didn't ever refer to my resume, which I had brought her a copy of, and often seemed to be referring to the credentials of someone totally different when asking about my background. She never smiled, never offered any information about UTI as a whole and informed she she had a meeting in a few minutes before asking if I had any questions, which I elected to forgo because I felt so rushed. All in all, this interview took less than 20 minutes.
When she called me a few days later to arrange an interview with her supervisor, I was surprised and thought perhaps she had just been having a bad day....hey, we are all entitled to them from time to time, so I thought I would continue with the interview process. She set up a time with her supervisor. The interview was scheduled for one hour via telephone. I arranged my day around it.... I scheduled my lunch break at work for the time we agreed upon and lo and behold, she called me over an hour late, again with no apology, and the interview went on for well over an hour. She asked me the EXACT same questions I had already been asked. ("tell me about a time when you...." type situational questions....). She, too, seemed to have no sense of my background or credentials and often referred to a lack of experience in areas where I had plenty of direct, actual, industry experience!
The next interview was (again, surprisingly) scheduled via email-- it was to be a phone interview with the college president. Again, a one hour time slot was scheduled for a specific time and this time, she never even called! I followed up and I was told the president had likely been too busy to call me and the interview was rescheduled. I had referred back to the email that with the interview time and I was correct about the day and time, but when the president called, she told me I had probably made a mistake!!! Incidentally, this time, she called an hour and a half late, with no apology and asked me, for the fourth time, the same exact questions the previous two interviewers had asked.
I was told i would hear back within a week and no one even had the courtesy to follow up with a rejection letter! It was such a gigantic waste of energy and utterly disrespectful to my time. The interview process is a two way dialogue (when done properly) where two parties aim to see if there is a potential match. The blatant inadherence to interview times and the obvious lack of communication between the interviewers (asking the exact same questions over and over) was unprofessional and inefficient at best.

Interviewed Nov 2008 (took a day)
The interview was a video interview with one of the HR person for the Mercedes-Benz graduate program. It was in a conference room at the UTI school with a sit in front a TV screen. The interview had about 30 questions and about 5 could be skipped. The questions ranged from general questions like, "What are some of your Hobbies?" or "Why did you choose this program?" to specific questions about your job experience. Because there were 30 questions, it was difficult to answer all of them.

Interviewed Jan 2010 (took 2 weeks)
I was told the process for the position was a 4-5 interview process to which i had three interviews. The last step that i took was a panel interview with "peers". They have a very structured process and a checklist of behavioral questions that are asked. While i don't mind behavioral interviews, i do prefer when they are conducted in a more conversational way rather than checking off items on a list. The phone screen interview that was conducted which iirc was by someone in HR was also very list-driven. I did like the folks with whom i met, but felt it was hard to "connect" with them given the format i experienced. i will chalk this up as a learning opportunity and feel positive about the process even though i didn't continue on.

Interviewed Dec 2009 (took 5 months)
The process started out great with lots of encouraging feedback. Over time, it became frustrating as there was no job description or clear timeline to hire. This led to a number of repetitive interviews drawn out over many months. The scope of the role also seemed to change with each successive interview due to a lack of shared vision of what the role was to be. After five months in the process there was a general declination sent out by a third party recruiter without even a thank you note from the in-house team. For a company striving to be best in class in this area, there process could bear some improvement from a candidate experience standpoint.

Interviewed Jun 2009 in Phoenix, AZ (took 2 weeks)
Went in and interviewed. Everything went well. Interview lasted approx. 45 minutes. I followed up with an email the next week. Another email the following week. Never heard from the HR person again after her initial contact with me. Totally unprofessional to not even email a response back to me. I know 2 other people who interviewed for the same job and they also never heard a thing. Glad they didn't hire me.
