I wasn't expecting this question, and probably should have been. I was leaving because working conditions at my old magazine were unbearable -- but, I needed a better way of saying that to present it better. Had I better prepared myself, I would have known a good way to answer it.

Saying that you're looking for a more collegial atmosphere, one that's less competitive or political or whatever, is just fine. Every company thinks it has a "friendly" work environment, so you're complimenting your reviewing without totally brown-nosing them.
