Interviewed Apr 2011 in Denver, CO (took 2 weeks)
The interview process with this company was a bit of a mess. The manager with whom I was scheduled to have my phone interview missed our first appointment completely. I called HR and scheduled another; this time, the manager called approximately 40 minutes late. Fortunately, the conversation itself went fairly smoothly (basically a vague description of the job, and open-ended questions, like "describe yourself"). Ultimately, HR invited me to come to headquarters for an on-site meeting.
ULA, unlike many other companies with which I've had experience, asks you to pay for all of your expenses -- namely your flight, hotel, car, and food -- out of pocket, then reimburses you after the process is complete. In other words, if you're currently jobless and intend to interview with this company, you might have problems. About a month after the interview had ended and I had submitted all the required forms, my reimbursement check came.
The on-site interview was, overall, a more positive experience. The manager seemed reasonably friendly, knowledgeable, and eager to answer my questions. This conversation, along with those I carried out with other engineers in the company (it was essentially a panel of three, but one at a time), was primarily a behavioral test. Sure, I was asked about prior work experience, school projects, teamwork, but these questions were generally non-technical in nature and were geared more towards an evaluation of my potential work habits and ability to interface with others.
A few other comments about the process: HR will tell you, for the on-site interview, that it will last approximately one hour (it takes about three times as long as indicated, so prepare your flights accordingly); there is no clear schedule laid out for you in advance. Also, getting feedback or a final reply after the interview process had ended was like pulling teeth. I was forced to call repeatedly, over the course of a month and a half, to receive any conclusive results.
