Interviewed Jun 2010 in Granite City, IL (took 2 weeks)
I emailed the vice president of the Illinois Division and she set up an interview with the Resource Development woman for a week later. At the interview she read over my resume and asked simple behavior questions ("how would you handle this..if this happened..") and since I was still in school she asked what my major was and when I was expected to graduate. The interview was about 10 minutes long. She then introduced me to the other people in the office and gave me a tour. It seemed like she knew she was going to hire me before I walked in.

Interviewed May 2009 (took 2 weeks)
I had a positive experience with United Way, overall. I applied for a position via their online system and heard back from someone in the HR department fairly quickly. I had a pleasant but somewhat intensive phone interview with a member of the hiring team, and was then invited in for an in-person interview. The first interview was with 2-3 people and was fairly straightforward. A few days later they called me in for a second interview. That interview was in a "panel" format, with 5 or 6 participants from various departments, and was much more in-depth. The participants asked intelligent and insightful questions about my experience and qualifications, as well as how I would approach various challenges and situations (most of which were clearly based on the realities of the position). The panel members were very friendly and personable and helpful, and made sure I had plenty of time to ask questions, etc. It was a very pleasant interview experience; after the meeting the HR rep had me fill out some forms and provide my reference info, and said they'd let me know. However, nobody ever contacted me. I called the HR rep and left two messages inquiring if the position had been filled, but never got a response. I didn't mind not being offered the job - it was a very tight job market and a very desirable position - but I would have appreciated a phone call letting me know either way. They seemed to be going through some organizational turmoil, so that may have been a factor, but it was a disappointing end to the experience.

Interviewed Jun 2010 (took 3 weeks)
It took a while for someone to contact me. I was finally contacted by phone. I was completely overdressed. I wore a pant suit with a collared shirt. The interview was with the executive director. He was wearing flip flops and cargo pants. Obviously, the culture was extremely laid back. Everyone was very nice. The interview was over a hour. After the first interview, I was contacted by email to return and meet members of their board. However, at this point I realized the organization was not for me. I declined to continue the application process. I would suggest that if you are interviewing, you are able to related your previous work experience with the job you are interviewing for. As previously stated, they are extremely low key. Regardless, they are looking for employees who are comfortable working and communicating with people on all different levels.

Interviewed Nov 2009 in Orlando, FL (took 4+ weeks)
I was contacted by a representative of a recruiting agency. The agency was in Texas and the job was located in Orlando Florida. I thought that was kind of weird, but I guess its a corporate thing. The recruiter scheduled a phone interview for a later date. On the day of the call, the recruiter was almost 45 minutes late calling. She asked standard questions and inquired about my knowledge of the non-profit industry.

Interviewed Nov 2009 in Rochester, NY (took a day)
Very cordial, very engaging discussion with the person who supervises the position. Work environment seemed quiet and not quite casual. The gentleman who conducted the interview focussed the discussion on a pre-established set of questions relevant to my experience. The questions were quite general in nature, and didn't provide much scope for discussing the particularities of the position on offer. (I suppose i needed to get to the next round for that....)

Interviewed Jan 2008 in Boston, MA (took 4+ weeks)
I initially applied for one job and was offered my choice between that one and another for which they thought my skills were a fit. They seemed interested in figuring out how to match my interests and skills to an open position in the organization. Downside: The hiring process to a really long time. A REALLY long time. So long that I had thought they had moved on.

Negotiation Details
I didn't attempt to negotiate with salary. Although I do now know that a colleague of mine was able to do so successfully. Be careful though, as a nonprofit they're very conscientious about their budgetary decisions.
