I applied online and the process took 2 days - interviewed at University of Maryland in July 2011.
Interview Details –
I've applied to numerous positions at College Park and for the most part I've been called for a phone interview, but only called back for one face-to-face interview. The questions they ask over the phone vary from position to position. Some calls have been strictly personality based while others have been knowledge and skill based. One call had 6 people on the phone asking me questions. I personally believe that's far to many, especially when you are asking 3-4 part questions over the speaker phone. I'm not accepting the call on my work phone, so I have to strain to hear the questions on my cell phone.
As for the face-to-face interview, I think it went over pretty well even though I wasn't offered the job. One thing, however, that bugged me is one of the committee members had to leave the meeting early. No one told me prior to starting that he had to go. He also displayed a lot of negative body language; moving around frequently, sighing, monotone when he asked questions. It was definitely a distraction.
Interview Question – The questions were to lengthy and hard to follow over speaker phone. Answer Question
