Interviewed Jan 2008 in Philadelphia, PA (took 2 weeks)
This was like most postdoctoral fellowship interviews and pretty standard. You meet with the PI (usually after being introduced by a colleague at your institution), have an informal interview with them regarding your research, discuss potential projects and funding, and finally give a postdoctoral seminar talk. After that, you may meet with other PIs in the department.

they asked me about my past experiences, student activities, "why you want to attend UPenn" question, and my favorite people in the history, who is your hero. They were particularly interested in my achievement in music, like why did you choose to play piano, how it helped your throughout your career.

Poor communication throughout the process. Little transparency. Appeared that the interviewer had not read either the cover letter or the resume. Clear that they were just going through the motions; anecdotes from other applicants indicated they already had a preferred internal candidate and were just going through the motions of looking at other applicants.

Interviewed Feb 2010 in Philadelphia, PA (took 3 weeks)
The interview was pretty basic. Asked me why I wanted to work at UPenn, why I would be good in the position, and all the other basic interview questions. It was only the first of 3 in the interview process. Basically weeding out to get to the next level.

Interviewed Jan 2010 in Philadelphia, PA (took 4+ weeks)
I received a phone call asking if I would be interested in meeting with the department concerning a position they currently had available. We arranged for the meeting time. At the time of the interview I met with the Department Manager and the HR Person. Both ladies were very professional, very nice and easy to talk with regarding the position and the requirements of the position. The office environment was very neat and clean, and the people I encountered on the way to the interview were very pleasant and helpful.

I applied for a Data Analyst position on-line and after two months I got an interview. I talked to 5 people in their group in an informal manner. Each session was about 15 minutes. Everyone was nice. No tough technical questions asked. They asked what kind of languages I can program in and what level.

Emailed professor, went to his office for a 30 minute interview. Professor showed me his lab and group. Described his research and challenges to be faced in the lab. Lab was organized but lacking in certain resources. Nice people to work around. Research proposal was not the most interesting.

I met with the Principal investigator and sat in her office for about 2 hours. It was a casual conversation about my background and my college experience. It was also very informal. I think the most important aspect was whether or not I clicked with the Principal invetsigator

Interviewed Sep 2009 in Philadelphia, PA (took 2 weeks)
I applied online and got a response two weeks later. I would recommend applying the day the job is posted to get in the pool of applications that actually get received. There was a scheduled phone interview where I was asked questions like "Describe yourself", "Describe how you handle stress", "What is your experience with MS Office?", very basic, non-behavioral based interview questions. After a successful phone interview, I did a 1:1 interview with the Assistant Dean of the dept., who was nice and asked several of the same questions in the phone interview. Then I was sent to a series of panel interviews that combined lasted about 3 hours. The questions were all focused on my skill sets and past performances.
Perception of the office: It seemed to me that the people who worked there were rather cold and professional, and one woman indicated that I would be everyone's servant (without actually saying that, but she impressed that idea quite firmly) and that I would have to deal with people who were in bad moods often (again, not her exact words, but the general idea). I came away from the interview not wanting the position. I do not know who they hired for the job, but the last person who held the job had a master's and was working on a Phd...so obviously extremely overqualified for a job that requires a minimum h.s. diploma.
The salary seems fair with the market, $30,000 for an admin. assistant job.

Interviewed Mar 2009 in Philadelphia, PA (took 2 weeks)
Interview in person twice within 2 weeks. The first interview was with the Assistant Dean of International Programs (with whom I would be working) and about 15 minutes at the end with the Dean of Internatinoal Admissions. The second interview was also with her, plus about 15 minutes with the Dean of Administration. It was pretty repetitive. The meeting with the Dean of Administration was ridiculously intense, so unnecessary. Its an admin assistant job, I have a bachelors degree from a top liberal arts college and I have been working in a similar position at UPenn for several months. It doesn't take a genius to do admin assistant work.
They ended up hiring someone extremely overqualified for the job. UPenn has a habit of doin that. They will hire people with masters for jobs more suitable for recent college grads... and likewise they will hire recent grads for positions more suitable for 9th graders. Oh, and you will be underpaid.
