Interviewed Nov 2011 (took 4+ weeks)
The work culture seemed very structured and competitive. Every employee I met was very professional. I enjoyed the interview process but I would say it felt much more intense than other places I've interviewed. Each employee was friendly yet very focused on trying to determine how I would fit in to their culture and also how successful I would be.

Interviewed Jan 2009 in Glendale, CA (took 4 days)
1) Submission of a very lengthy online application.
2) 1-hr telephone interview. They do not ask anything about the job. Questions are put-you-on the spot sort of questions. The goal is to get a sense of who you are.
3) Skills, IQ, Typing, and Personality tests.
4) Panel Interview, 2:1 Interviews with at least 8 people in groups of two, group reasoning activity
5) If you are hired into a bilingual role, you will also have to go through oral competency testing in the other language.
It is not uncommon for them to interview groups of 20-25 candidates at the fourth stage and hire no one, if they do not feel they are right for the position. They would rather start over than hire the wrong person because their initial training program last 10 weeks with an additional one year mentorship program. You are basically considered a trainee for at a least one year.

Interviewed May 2011 (took 5 weeks)
Two weeks after I applied I was contacted to complete a Preliminary Questions form. They basically want to assess what you know about the company and how your skill set applies. After they reviewed that I was scheduled for a one hr telephone interview and from their was moved along to a critical thinking and math test on site that took two hours. From there I got an email to complete "another assessment". It is a Caliper Personality test and about two weeks later they contacted me to say they had made an offer to another candidate.

Interviewed Feb 2009 in Chattanooga, TN (took 2 months)
Phone interview last about 40 minutes, and I received questions concerning my resume and experiences. A couple of the more "difficult" questions concerned things like "name a situation within which you needed to improve and explain how you tried to improve" or "name a goal that you have set for yourself and how you measured its success."
Con: the decision on whether or not I could move on in the interview process took about a month.

Interviewed Feb 2010 in Portland, ME (took 3 months)
Responded quickly to say they would like an interview, but then she took forever to get back to me to schedule the interview. She was pleasant enough during the interview, but then strung me along saying she was looking for marketing opportunities in the company for months before finally telling me they weren't interested.

Interviewed Oct 2009 in Worcester, MA (took 2 weeks)
Got my interview through my school's career services. The man I interviewed with was not particularly friendly and had also given 4 interviews prior to my interview. I was expecting more sales oriented questions but he asked me more about what I knew about the company. There were the general sales questions such as why sales and if I had ever had to deal with a difficult person etc. but again, he was more focused on my knowledge of the company. After the interview was over I didn't hear back for about 2 weeks at which time I received an email saying i was not chosen to move onto the second round.

Interviewed Nov 2009 in Portland, ME (took 2 weeks)
Excellent experience-I interviewed with probably 5-6 people that had fairly advanced positions in the company. All took a sincere interest in the interview, and it is evident that Unum looks to hire quality. The interview day was fairly long, and slightly repetitive but I believe it was only to give a better impression of different facets of the organization. Seemed like an excellent place to work, and I unfortunately chose to decline (had a return offer at a company I knew well and had a great experience with, which seemed to be the safest bet.)
