Interview Question for Software Engineer at Interactive Intelligence:

Using notepad only, write a method that will take a string and return a char. The method should return the char of the most used character in the string. if there is a tie, return the first char in the sequence with the most used characters.

If you can't code with vim or notepad, than I guess you cannot code well. There are definitely friends of mine, and including me who can code well with notepad without syntax highlights, and code assits. I guess they were just testing for your knowledge as a real coder without any help from the internet. By the way, returning the char of the most used character in the string is one of easiest question to solve.
