Accepted Offer – Interviewed in Southfield, MI Oct 2011 – Reviewed Feb 12, 2012
Interview Details – I had a phone interview with a member of HR where I was required to disclose all of my previous employers - including specific dates of employment - for the past 7 years. At the end of the phone interview I was invited to come to the site 4 days later for a skills test and a 1:1 interview with another member of HR. The skills test was on a computer and required basic problem-solving questions as well as a multi-tasking simulation. At the end of the interview I was asked to come back to meet 1:1 with a supervisor. In this interview I was asked basic questions about previous experience, situational questions and I also listened to some phone calls with customers and was asked to provide feedback on how I felt the VZW reps handled the calls. About two weeks after the first phone conversation I received my job offer. Following the offer I went through a drug test and a background check.

Negotiation Details – Never negotiate until after an offer of employment has been made and you have accepted the offer. Leverage your experience and credentials (accomplishments, education) to negotiate. Tell the hiring manager what you can do above and beyond what the job requires. Always ask for a little more than what you actually want (Ex. If you are offered $40,000 a year, but you actually believe you can substantiate why the company should start you at $42,000. Ask for $43,000 and the hiring manager may negotiate up $1,000 and you can then negotiate down $1,000, which will give you the $42,000 that you actually wanted.
