ECommerce Specialist at Vodafone UK

Accepted Offer – Interviewed in Newbury, England (UK) Dec 2008 – Reviewed Dec 14, 2012

Interview Details – I was contacted by a previous colleague about a new role that had become available. At the time I was having some challenges with my existing employee so I decided to entertain the idea of moving to Vodafone. It was a significant salary increase so it made sense.

I was invited to a first interview, which was with the hiring manager and a HR representative. If I'm honest, the HR guy seemed like he was on a bit of a power trip, asking unnecessary questions and probing into areas as if I was at a shrinks office. I later found out that this guy had a habit of doing this, and it wasn't widely regarded as useful by others. The hiring manager asked more relevant competency based questions. Questions like 'define what a brand is to you', and 'give an example of where you've managed a project from start to finish, and tell us what the highs and lows were'. This lasted an hour and was based in the Newbury HQ.

I was then invited back for a second interview, which I was surprised about following my experience with the shrink/HR guy.

The second interview was to be with the hiring manager, and the head of the department (the hiring manager's boss). For this I had to pick a website and prepare a plan of how I would improve data capture and marketing opportunities across the website. I chose T-Mobile as it was the same industry and made sense as it would have helped me if I got the job. At the last minute the interviewers were changed to the hiring manager and another guy at the same level, who had been there a bit longer and was close to the head of the department. I was fine with this. The first 30 minutes or so consisted of me running through the presented I had prepared, with a few questions coming up along the way (nothing too taxing). The second 30 minutes focused a bit more on competency based questions again, mostly related to what I had presented. It was fairly standard stuff and as long as you know what your focus will be in the role, you can have a think about your past experiences and make sure you're armed with the right stuff. I thought the interviews worked well in terms of trying to see if I was the right candidate, as well as giving me an opportunity to get a feel for the company.

Once I'd finished the second interview I was pretty sure I wanted to work at Vodafone. The offices are smart and open and the culture seemed vibrant. It was just a matter of waiting.

I think it was three or four days before I received a formal offer (just before Christmas), which I accepted straight away and I started in the January.

The process after this was fairly easy. I had a HR contact that I spoke with and arranged the relevant paperwork though. And after starting, although I had the new employee syndrome for quite some time (it was a close knit team) I learnt a great deal and really appreciate my time working there.

Interview Question – It's one that comes up time and time again - How would you deal with a stakeholder in your project who is pushing back and doesn't want to make the change that you want to make. I babbled on for a while about showing them the statistics and proving the change was positive etc etc. I think what they were really looking for was that, if all else failed, I would be prepared to escalate in order to get the job done. This question and answer has stuck with me since this interview!   Answer Question

Negotiation Details – Fairly quick and simple. They offered me what I wanted, so I accepted straight away.

Graduate Scheme at Vodafone UK

No Offer – Interviewed in Newbury, England (UK) Mar 2012 – Reviewed Aug 11, 2012

Interview Details – First stage - an online application form
Second stage - logical test (SHL type). The test is very easy - some questions are the same as the practice ones on SHL
Third stage - telephone interview. Duration: no more than 30 minutes. Asked are about 4 questions. Two of them were: Tell me about a time when you had use feedback from others to achieve a goal; Tell me about a time when you've experienced a challenging environment
Fourth and last stage - assessment centre. It consisted of two one-to-one interviews, a presentation, and a group exercise.
Each one-to-one interview was 20 minutes long, asked were standard competency based questions. Make sure your responses are very detailed and the examples you are using are complex, preferably from your experience in the industry.

The presentation was about 5 minutes long. You had to prepare it in advance, at home, and you've got a couple of days to do it. No PowerPoint was required, and unless you are advised to do a PowerPoint, don't do one.

Group exercise - easy to grasp, but there's a lot of information to read for a short period of time. Make sure you jump in first, speak a lot, keep an eye on the time, maintain a good eye contact with all participants and constantly ask them whether they are happy with the decisions that are being taken.
