Interviewed Sep 2011 (took 2 days)
The interview process is standard. I submitted my resume online and the next day I received a phone call which consisted of about a 20 minute interview. I came in the next day and met with two different people and was asked standard interview questions. If you are professional and well spoken and have some background in retail or sales you should be fine.

Interviewed Oct 2011 in Davenport, IA (took 2 months)
I met with the college recruiter at my college's career fair and then applied online. Within a few days of applying online HR contacted me to schedule an interview. During this time she asked me several questions regarding why I chose Von Maur and why I wanted to be a buyer, at the end of the phone conversation she then informed me that she would like to schedule a formal interview. My first formal interview was with the same college recruiter asking me questions about myself as well as behavioral questions. She then contacted me again several days later to inform me that they wanted to do a second phone interview. I then interviewed with one of the store managers from their stores and it lasted about an hour, consisting mostly of behavioral type questions. A week after that HR contacted me again to fill out paperwork for a background check; about a week later the director of HR called me to schedule my final interview which consisted of them flying me to their corporate office as well as a tour of their facilities. Less than a week later they called offering me the job.
Overall they were extremely nice and very accommodating! They paid for all of my travel expenses and even paid for me to relocate. You must be willing to relocate or they won't even look at you!

Interviewed Feb 2012 in Ann Arbor, MI (took 1 week)
I must admit, I was very excited to make it past the first interview process. I've been in the food service industry for 15+ years and I am ready to get out of it. After I scheduled my 1:1 interview, I scoured the internet and this website looking for any and every interview question that could be asked, typed them out, and chose my best answers to them all. I felt ready for my interview, I felt confident. I updated my professional portfolio, my resume was top-notch, and I had all the bells and whistles to wow my interviewer. However, much to my dismay, the series of questions I was asked were not the questions I had researched and prepared for. Even worse, only one question was even relevant to the job I was applying for. I was asked a series of "tell me about a time" questions. My interviewer was not interested in my strengths or weaknesses, my resume was never asked for or looked at, and my portfolio (filled with dynamite report writing) was not looked at.
I did however get to mention how I have a degree in criminal justice, but no interest was given to the classes I took, how I graduated at the top of my class, or even how well written and detailed my reports were, how fluent I am on the computer. I interviewed with the HR person, and not the LP manager or anyone from the LP department. The line of questioning didn’t really lend me a chance to really sell myself.
Note to Von Maur HR… “Tell me about a time” questions are NOT a good way to get to know someone. I can handle stressful situations, I know how to deal with people… I know what I’m doing! Besides, I refuse to believe that a job as a loss prevention associate is SO complicated that I couldn’t possibly learn QUICKLY how to do it.
I know I may sound bitter, but this is the first job interview I’ve had in five years and I can’t tell you how many jobs I’ve applied for. I just expected a little more.

Interviewed Jan 2010 (took 2 weeks)
I got a call at a super random time so that threw me off but after that I set up a 1 on 1 interview. They were the normal "what would you do if...." questions. Super easy. Then I read some stuff about a background check and scheduled my second interview. The second interview had pretty much the same questions.

Interviewed May 2011 in Davenport, IA (took 2 weeks)
Interview was asked from a pre-dictated question sheet. No room for additioal questions. Was displeased to see a KID read off a sheet and not have experienced questions to asked. Incompetence at its finest.

Interviewed Jun 2011 (took 2 days)
I was greeted by HR on the phone. They were extremely polite and accommodating. I interviewed with HR before store manager. The questions are most scenario about how you would handle different situations with customers, co-workers, and supervisors. The interview was pleasant and natural though notably formal.
I was shocked by the dress code which took the interviewer 3 minutes to recite. Only skirts and dresses, and you must wear tights. This to me turned me off because it feels sexist and ridiculous. Panty hose are out of fashion. As a clothing store I would have expected them to keep pace and stay fashion forward.

Reason for Declining
The pay was too small and the culture was too formal. I don't agree that women should have to wear only skirts and dresses as dress pants can be feminine and formal as well.

Interviewed Jul 2011 in Davenport, IA (took a day)
I sent the recruited an email for the executive training program and received an email back from her that day asking me to apply for the position online. Two days later I received a call from the recruiter and she asked if I had about 15 minutes to talk with her about the program. We talked for about 20 minutes. She was incredibly professional and very polite. She asked me questions like
'why do you want to work for VM?'
'Tell me about your past positions'
'What are your pay expectations' Which REALLY caught me off guard considering no one had ever asked me that during an interview or quick '15 min talk.....'
..Seemed like she was reading the questions off from a list
Anyways, at the end of our conversation she asked me if I was still interested in the position and if I would like to begin the interviewing process and have a formal interview with her for the position. (surprised me because everyone always says that VM is VERY slow with the hiring process!!)
My interview is tomorrow.
