Interviewed Sep 2008 in McAllen, TX (took 2 days)
If you are not contacted after applying, you must call the HR dept. again and again until they ask you to come in. Seems excessive but with the volume of applicants at times you need to "push" yourself ahead in the selection process. When you come in you will usually be interviewed by the area manager of the position your applied for. Make sure you mention previous retail or specific knowledge of the area your going for because your pay increases based on experience. Once you go in for the interview, they have more than likely already determined your pay rate and you will have to be approved by upper management if it's going to increase. The personnel office is usually a medium sized room with a row of computers for computer based learning (CBL's) for new hires. Expect to have people doing CBL's and random associates and management going in and out of the area during your interview, unless the interviewer has asked that no one enter the office and that rarely happens. The interviewer reads a sheet of stale predetermined outdated questions and they rate each one depending on what you say. Allot of "what would you do" and "john has a problem.....what would you do?" kind of questions. Honestly as a interviewer myself, for new stores especially we would hire an individual no matter how the interview went merely based on the immediate need for more associates.

Interviewed Apr 2012 in Aurora, CO (took 2 days)
The online application was very vague, mostly employment interests and past job titles/salaries. No providing of skills/experience. I was surprised by a return phone call. The interview was 3 one-on-one meetings, with successively more important personnel. Questions were entirely canned "tell me about a situation where you..."

applied online. Received a call about 1 week later for a interview. had a interview with the front end manager and a training manager. They asked about 5 questions...the manager walked me to the front and showed me what a csm does. she took me to the back and told me to make sure my references were correct because she will call them. told me she had to send me home because she had another interview and told me that she will let me know something later. 10 minutes after i left the interview the manager called me and offered me the job.

The questions asked are very tricky and sound like the same question everytime which makes it difficult to keep coming up with new material. My advice would be to do some brainstorming in advance that way you have alot of fresh ideas in your head and your not having to think of something off the top of your head.

Interviewed Sep 2009 (took a day)
If you had walk in on my interview you would have never guess that's what it was.Because seriously it looked like a three ring circus was going on in there! The manager didn't even look me in the eye! Everyone and their grand-mama kept interrupting us it was very inappropriate. They would ask questions and then duck out and pop back in every few minutes. After 10 minutes of this I got up shook her hand and said thank you for this opportunity and when you have the time to sit down and conduct this interview in an appropriate manner call me and let me know.

Interviewed Aug 2011 in Wichita, KS (took 5 days)
Meet with the Assistant Manager first who immediately recommneded a second interview with the Store Manager. Relaxed atmosphere but proper dress attire is recommended. If jeans are worn they should be pressed along with a nice shirt or blouse. Refrain from wearing shorts, wrinkled, or questionable clothing. Was pretty much hired on the spot and the job offer was officially extended after the successful completion of the background and drug test which "MUST" be done within 24 hours.

Negotiation Details
Not a lot of rooms for negotiation but pay increases were offered based on prior work history. The benefits make up the difference for the lost in pay. Also, if you are fortunate to work close to home not having to spend extra money on gas and lunch is worth at least $2 to $3 an hour. Despite what people say Wal-Mart is a great company to work for and the opportunities come quickly if you are willing to apply yourself. Just like any other job you must work hard and be dedicated if you expect to be rewarded.

Interviewed May 2010 in Fort Wayne, IN (took 3 weeks)
I was originally a Cashier. After 8 months, a position opened up for Customer Service Manager. On the WIRE, I had to update my career opportunities and take an assessment test for supervisory positions. It was lengthy, but very simple. Though ten other cashiers also attempted the test, only two passed.
Originally, I was not considered for the job, but I spoke with a select member of management. Since she liked me and originally hired me, she vouched for me through HR had had me selected as a candidate. This process took a few weeks. She, as well as another CSM, conducted the interview in person while I was on the clock. By the end of the week, I was offered the position.

Interviewed Jul 2010 (took 2 weeks)
I had already been employed, but was promoted to CSM after applying for an opening. The interview consisted of a lot of situational questions, such as "Describe what you would do in this situation". Very basic, generic questions that were easy to answer. I also had to take a test before being interviewed related to leadership skills.

Negotiation Details
I don't think that there is a lot of room for CSM's to negotiate. There are different pay levels for associates, and they make an offer based on those levels as well as how long you have been there. I had no interest in being there long term, but was working part time to pay some bills through college. Given that, I didn't really care to negotiate because would be minuscule either way. However, I would tell people in higher up positions to try to negotiate somewhat.

Interviewed Jun 2011 in Beaufort, SC (took a day)
I applied online and received a phone call from Human Resources about a month later. I was asked to come in for an interview a 2 mornings after the phone call. During the time before the interview I researched the companies history and prepared to answer common interview questions that I searched on Google. I wore a skirt and button up shirt, and when I arrived I waited in the site to store area of the store. I was then invited to to the human resources office where I was asked to sit across from the female that took me back there. There were several other employees in the office talking and going about their work, so it was sort of difficult to hear and focus as she read the questions. On top of that, she stuttered and her words ran together...and they were all long questions. Mostly having to do with past experiences, such as "explain a time when you had to deal with a difficult employee. How did you get across to them and what was the outcome?" That's not exactly what she asked, but in a nutshell! She asked maybe 5 or 6 questions, but didn't write down my responses..just circled an S for all of my answers. (for satisfactory). Afterwards she led me back to the site to store area where I waited until another woman came to get me. We went to the same office as before, and she pretty much asked me the same questions, and circled E for my answers. (for Exceeded expectations). As I finished with her, they were already asking if I could come to orientation the following week. They called the following Tuesday and wanted me to come back for 9 hours of orientation the next morning. So that night I had to rush out and buy some khakis and a blue shirt. I went to orientation, but when I found out that they wanted to pay me less than my expected pay (I made more on unemployment) for a manager position, I declined the job offer. On my way out I spoke with a couple of diff employees and they all had HORRIBLE things to say about the Customer service manager position, so I'm sure I made the right decision!
