    Application

I applied online. The process took 5 weeksinterviewed at Waters (Milford, MA) in February 2015.

    Interview

Applied on Indeed for the position, got a call a few weeks later from potential boss just telling me about the position and the company. He asked me a few questions about my resume, was very pleasant, and I asked some questions about the company and about the position. It was a relaxed phone screen. Was contacted again a week or two later and they offered to pay for my travel expenses to visit and interview at their headquarters in Milford MA, which I accepted. Was put up in a nice hotel near the facility, to which I arrived at 8 AM the day of the interview.

Was expecting just a few hours of behavioral interviewing, but it turned out to be a pretty long day, about 7 hours interviewing with 9 different people in the mechanical engineering department one at a time, about 45 minutes per person. 3 out of 9 discussions were behavioral, and the other 6 were somewhat technical, asking some basic undergraduate mechanical engineering questions. The topics were statics, dynamics, and heat transfer, just the basics really. Review some of the basics: always draw a free body diagram for statics, review the basic equations for dynamics such as the expression for fundamental frequency for a mass attached to a spring with no damper, and review the basics of heat transfer a bit. In all, I was pretty unprepared because I didn't review any of this stuff, but managed to do alright anyway. Also, read through the primers that Waters provides on liquid chromatography before interviewing so you have a general idea of the kind of equipment you will be designing.

Midway through the interviews, they treated me to lunch which I had with my potential boss. By the end of the day, I was pretty tired, but drove the 4 hours home anyway. Got a call a week later and they gave me a good offer which I accepted.

    Interview Questions

    • Rigid beam suspended by two rods made of different materials (brass and aluminum.) How will the beam move if the only external force is gravity?   1 Answer
    • Block sliding down a slope with given friction coefficient. What angle of the slope will be just enough to make the block start slipping?   1 Answer
    • Several questions about masses attached to springs. What is the fundamental frequency of oscillation for each system? What is the expression for free vibration of such systems? Which will have a higher oscillation frequency?   1 Answer
    • Take a look at this schematic for some pumps connected in series which we use in our system, and tell me how we can get a constant steady flow of fluid into the liquid chromatography tube chamber using these two pumps. The second pump directly feeds the first pump, and the first pump directly feeds the tube chamber.   1 Answer
    • Take a look at this device. We are transferring some heat through this piece of aluminum which has a slot in it near its end. Why do you think that slot is there?   1 Answer
