My answer was "no one likes to lose, so you need to win without the other person thinking they lost"

My interviewer seemed to like this answer but did not get me off the hook that easily - he asked me for details and to walk him through step by step a large complex negotiation I had succeeded. He challenged me on why I felt I had won the negotiation and what I would have done differently in hindsight. Questions really made me think and to have to answer on the spot is a challenge. Even with a long experience it is sometimes hard to explain how you do something because it does come naturally at some points and you don't always think through all of your actions
