Interviewed Mar 2012 in Austin, TX (took 1+ week)
Very difficult people to interview for. Certainly an air of arrogance in the room. No smiles. No patience. Certainly not the type of people that founded Whole Foods. They expect you to do quite a bit of in-store research prior to the interview. 15 minutes to tell your background, 30 minutes of vague questions being thrown at you and 15 minutes for you to wrap up why you should be hired. Not common for someone from the outside to be haired as a department manager. Invited back to interview for another position but due to the continued lack of professionalism I ultimately opted not to pursue a position with Whole Foods.

Interviewed Jan 2012 in Austin, TX (took 2 weeks)
The initial phone interview was an hour - a series of general questions about my background and experience, very structured Q&A with little to no feedback from interviewer. It was basically an hour screening with the interviewer checking off a list of questions on his end.
I received an email several days later inviting me to a panel/group interview the following week. I was also asked to submit a 90 Day Integration Plan detailing how I would get up to speed in the position.
The panel interview was in a conference room with 12 people from various departments firing off random questions - the interview was about an hour.
I was not impressed with Whole Foods interviewing process as it was very structured and impersonal and although its reputation precedes it - the employees I met did not give me a positive impression at all.

Interviewed Nov 2011 in Austin, TX (took a day)
I was able to obtain a job-shadow for an entry-level accounting position that was opening because a friend was advocating for me on that team. The job-shadow was on a Wednesday and interviews were to be held on that Friday. It was a successful meeting with the team member that I shadowed and was comfortable that I would do well in the position. I would be double-checking invoice totals on the computer. Since I had emailed back and forth with team members and the manager, I at least expected opportunity to interview. However, I learned that even though a friend is pulling for you, they prefer to hire from inside, and they don't like you to dress too professionally. They do not like suits, but mohawks are OK. I felt overdressed in Gap pants, a blouse, and short heels. Be yourself, but be just like them. There may be some sort of secret code. They did not extend the courtesy to call to let me know that they preferred not to interview me...they depended on my friend to figure it out. Austin is overwhelmed with educated young people that will work for low pay, so they don't need to outsource repetitious tasks. This is a matter of organizational sustainability, and Whole Foods has really been able to benefit from the local population.

Interviewed Dec 2010 in Austin, TX (took 1+ week)
Whole Foods was very helpful and responsive. They kept me appraised and encouraged every step of the way. It seemed like a lot of interviewing and oversight for a minor position. Disappointing that I didn't get the job but I appreciate them letting me know right away.

Interviewed Mar 2011 in Austin, TX (took 2 days)
The process was generally positive. I was interviewed primarily for my personality and perception of how I would fit on the team rather than dragging, mundane technical questions. My manager was empowered to hire me quickly and without any visible interference from the organization. I found out later that people were drawn from other teams to join the interview, for good reasons like their ability to quickly determine abilities. The company represented itself well and fairly, showing a good environment that would be the one I'd work in.

Negotiation Details
I was told by the staffing company that I worked with that I would not be given the opportunity to negotiate and that the compensation offered was take-it-or-leave-it. I would advise anyone considering an offer to be willing to walk away.

Interviewed Feb 2008 in Austin, TX (took 4 weeks)
Initially, a phone interview was help between the Internal Audit Manager and myself. She briefly introduced herself and turned the interview over to me for questions. While it seems awkward at first that she did not want to lead the conversation, the interview seemed to run smoothly and never felt forced. About a week later I was called in for a group interview consisting of the Internal Audit Manager as well as the Director and about 4 staff members. They asked behavioral questions as well as some random questions - if you could do anything other than accounting, what would it be? What kind of tree would you be?
