Interviewed Aug 2011 (took a day)
I'm pretty sure I applied online in May/June. But never got any type of reply and assumed the position had been filled. Late August I get a call asking me if I was still interested, I was. And a little confused but made an appointment for the interview. I went to check online, and couldn't even find where I'd applied to this specific WFM. Anyways I go in, and hadn't expect their to be a panel. There was the Store Leader, Customer Service Team Leader, and another person who I've seen like once since working here.
That told me to talk about myself, which is kind wide to start. But I talked about hobbies, then they asked questions. Like about transportation, school, future plans, how I handled difficult situations, what I knew about the company, and how I was familiar with it. I named off what I knew as a customer, and things from the site like core values, and how they started which they liked.
After everything was wrapped up they offered me the position on the spot, and I accepted.

I didn't, haha the pay was already like 3 dollars more than what I was making and I was happy with that considering I had not experience in grocery stores or markets.

Interviewed Jul 2011 in Santa Fe, NM (took a day)
I applied online and was called about a week later with a followup question about my cash handling experience and to schedule an interview. The interview was in three stages, starting with the least influential and going up to the most, sequentially. The questions were easy to answer, mostly concerning my work ethic and experience. All three were very friendly, and the first two seemed more to get a sense of my personality before passing me on to the next stage. The first two took about five minutes each, the last about ten.

Interviewed Oct 2009 in Bellevue, WA (took 1+ week)
They try to tell you what a wonderful place it is to work for. Ask most employees and we were all led to believe wholefoods would be a place that you would be proud of. Exactly the opposite of that is true.

Interviewed Apr 2011 (took 2 days)
Applied online and with in on week got a call from the payroll specialist on a Wednesday. She did a pre-screen telephone interview. Asked about my schedule since I am a student. I believe that was her main concern because not much more was asked. She then made an appointment for a 1on1 interview with the Team Leader for that Friday. She stated that I didnt have to wear a suit to the interview, it can be casual (stated khaki and a polo as an example).
I dressed a little above casual for the interview on Friday. Met with the Team Leader in the cafe. She asked about me. I told her my career was customer service orientated. Also threw in my interest in organic and how I contribute to green causes. She was very laid back and we even talked of the weather etc. I had a feeling that it went really well. But I usually always nail the interview. Getting the interview is the hard part.
Got a call on Sunday with a job offer, and I accepted.
I have read many of the reviews and I am hoping this store is not reflective of some of the others. Keeping my fingers crossed.

I did not negotiate because they hit my number. Which the pay is approximately $2-$3 per hour more than other grocery stores.

Interviewed Mar 2011 in Redwood City, CA (took 5 days)
met with ATL at the cafe which read from a script exactly had not reviewed my application or resume asked about 20 questions all mentioned here before but may have been phrased differently the atmosphere was much more laid back as in this interview the store manager was not present. the most important concern of the team leader who also asked about 7 questions who came after one was "describe an experience where you have you have taught or instructed a customer and the results"- was offered the position immediately after the couple minutes speaking with team leader and asked to wait for a call as they proceed to conduct a credit and background check

Negotiation Details
offered 11.25 which i guess is 2 or 3 dollars above minimum wage in California state as a new employee in a starting position i did not want to risk getting the position by attempting to negotiate as the position starts you with bagging for 2 or so weeks before becoming a cashier- they prefer to give a test of produce code knowledge before trusting a employee with the actual cashier position

Interviewed Oct 2010 in Birmingham, AL (took 2 days)
I just relocated to this town for University, went to Whole Foods one day and saw a friend working there! I needed a job badly so he told me to go online and put in an application. I did, and 8 days later received a call to come in for an interview. Spoke first to one woman, then a second, in what I imagine was a pre-screening process. I was asked basically the same questions by both women. They were trying to get a feel for me, how much I wanted to work, if I understood the goals of Whole Foods (fortunately I used to work at a health food store, which they seemed to really like). They asked if I could come back later to talk to the manager. I did, and met with a nice young man who asked me some more 'interviewy' questions, like "Where do you see yourself in 5 years?" and "What's your strongest asset / weakest trait on a job?". The last question he asked me was "What are you passionate about?" The first thing I said was "Food!" b/c I study food as part of cultural anthropology and I volunteer on an organic farm. Now I realize all this is making me sound like a big hippie, but honestly I'm not. I wore J. Crew pants and a nice gray sweater to the interview. I honestly was afraid I wouldn't be 'heady' enough for them, lots of people there with dreads and ear plugs. But apparently they liked me b/c a few days after speaking to the manager, another lady called and asked me to come talk to her. I went up there and she asked me some of the SAME q's I was asked during the first interview. But I was desperate for a job so I really didn't mind. Now all this time, I thought I was interviewing for Customer Service, since that's the position I applied for online. But when she asked me how I felt about 'menial tasks' I realized they needed a cashier! After assuring her I'd ran a cash register before, at a different grocery store even, and knew what to expect from standing all day, I was offered the job. Took 4 people and 3 separate trips up there, but I was so relieved!
I've read not to mention that you love 'organic/health food', and honestly I worried that doing so might make them think I was just saying whatever it took to work there, but my work/activity history corroborated my statement, so why hide it? Don't hesitate to mention that you are passionate about the kinds of things they sell there, especially if your life reflects it. This will help them see that you'll be a good fit, unless they're just absolute hipster snobs who don't like someone with enthusiasm. Sadly this seems to be the case at some stores. This store is a lot more down to earth and I'm glad to be an employee.

I was so desperate for a job that I dared not ask for more than they were offering. You get chances for raises later so I decided to wait and see how I do there and ask for a raise after being there for awhile. Plus it already pays a LOT more than any other retail job I've EVER had, so no complaints from me. Oh and can't beat that 20% discount.

Interviewed Aug 2008 (took 1 week)
Applied online, straightforward and much faster application than other grocery stores (ie. no personality test). They e-mail as a follow-up and let you know whether or not you've been chosen for an interview. and they will explain if you aren't chosen (ie. needed more experience, not the right availability etc.). The 1st interview was a screening process but apparently this depends on how many people are being interviewed. It's a brief interview, typically with the HR person. They call if they want to schedule another interview, which is with a department manager, who will typically bring over a store manager after and re-interview you essentially, and s/he will ask you pretty much the same questions so be prepared to have two answers to every question so you're not repeating yourself.
