If you dont know someone, make sure to speak confidently. Most of the time if you get an interview all you have to do is show up and speak somewhat well and you will be invited back.
Also, typically when they are interviewing it is because they have a serious need. Use that to your advantage and negotiate a fair wage.
Interview Question – What do you bring to whole foods? Answer Question
Negotiation Details – They made an offer and I foolishly accepted. I found out later that a less qualified person started at a higher wage than I because he asked.

Interview Details –
I applied online and received a phone call 3 weeks later to schedule an 1 to 1 interview.
The interview consisted of 1 associate team leader and 1 team leader. It was very casual, starting with standard questions and eventually to more detailed ones: assuming your best friend and you were closing the store one day and you caught him/her stealing, what would you do? How did you deal with an angry customer? What dish would you make to impress me? What is your hobby? Where do you see yourself in 1 year? What is your favorite at Whole Foods..etc.
After all these questions, I then was interviewed by the store manager. He only asked one question: do you want to be a team member or a manager? After which he started talking about culture and values of Whole Foods. I believe he liked our interactions because as the conversation came to the end, I was offered a position on the spot.
My best advices to potential employees would be:
1. STUDY about Whole Foods: read about their core values and history, read about career advance path and about different levels. check out interview questions on glassdoor (oh you're here already! =D) My interviewers were impressed when I showed that I knew about the core values of Whole Food (why do you want to work here), how Whole Foods promote team memebers to associate team members (where do you see yourself in 1 year) and the fact that Whole Foods has been on the 100 Best Employers list for the past 15 years, (why whole foods)
2. Be yourself. The info you got after doing #1 should make you quite confident about the interview. Then it's just a matter of going in and letting your personality. How you answer these questions is as important as your answers. I definitely noticed my interviewers trying to get a feel of my personality during the process.
I hope this helps. Good luck!

Declined Offer – Interviewed in Portland, OR May 2009 – Reviewed May 31, 2009

Qualified applicants are pre-screened by Team Leader (Store Manager) one-on-one. Very casual, relaxed.
Then, if qualified by first screening, passed on to formal panel interview that has regional team leaders for your job. Grueling with nine people shooting questions at you and about 45 minutes to quickly give a concise relevant answer.
Interview Question – Ask to explain WF corporate culture in 2 minutes or less. View Answer
Reason for Declining – Good company but the pay scale is low compared to other similar positions and benefits are also not as good. They ask me to take a 20% cut from my last job. Just could not do it.

Interview Question – What would you make for a friendly dinner? View Answer
Negotiation Details – Negotiate rate and availability.
No Offer – Reviewed Oct 11, 2012
Interview Details – I attended one of the WFM job fairs. The first interviewer seemed distracted and was checking his phone. I was moved ahead and met with the Team Leader for one of the departments I was interested in. She was really nice and very easy to talk to. I felt like she wanted to help me get to "yes". Unfortunately, I didn't get the same feeling from the last person I talked to. Overall, everyone was nice and clearly passionate about WFM.
Interview Question –
Be prepared to answer very specific questions about the department that interests you.
The other customer service type questions are pretty basic: Have you ever been to a WFM? What immediately caught your attention about that store? (The second question was asked twice.)

Accepted Offer – Interviewed in Mar 2011 – Reviewed May 28, 2012
Interview Details –
I interviewed for multiple departments before starting as a cashier. In grocery, they chose someone else with more experience. In specialty, the interviewer chose to hire her friend. In customer service, I got in.
They contact you by phone to set up an interview. You go to the customer service desk to let them know you're there, and wait in the cafe area while they page the manager to interview you. They ask really easy questions, and it doesn't seem like most of them are experienced at interviewing. If the first interviewer likes you, they immediately set up a second interview with the shift leader on duty. If that second one goes well, you fill out a background check consent form and wait about a week for it to clear.
Interview Question – How have you dealt with difficult customers? Answer Question
Accepted Offer – Interviewed in Apr 2010 – Reviewed Oct 31, 2011
Interview Details – I was interviewed by the team leader and the assistant team leader. It was a pretty basic interaction. We basically just went over the application and exchanged bits of personality. For the most part it was their time to feel me out and my time to shine. My advice is to be energetic and confident. The job is fast paced and deals with a lot of customer interaction so signs of excelling with this is a huge plus.
