They asked me why I wanted to work at William-Sonoma. They asked me about my skill set. They asked me if I cook or if I had ever taken cooking classes in my life. They asked me if I was or intended to be knowledgeable about cooking. They asked me if I could wrap. They asked me if I could wash dishes. They said that if I work there I have to work a closing or opening shift at least once a week.

I interviewed for a management position with one of the stores that falls under the Williams Sonoma brand. The initial interview with the Store Manager was very positive and professional, but otherwise the experience was long and arduous. The 2nd person who interviewed me quit a week later. Their replacement then conducted another phone interview and then a couple weeks later another in-person interview. I had a total of 4 interviews over a period of at least 8 weeks - I lost track. While all the people I spoke with were personable and knowledgeable about their business, they did not seem to have information relative to the salary and benefits being offered. I had a couple of subsequent conversations with a DM regarding my final interview and company culture also.

I've interviewed three times now for positions at Williams-Sonoma Inc. Of those interviews, I've had two sets of all day interviews and 1 set of telephone interviews. The disappointing part, and what I think is the unprofessional part, of the process is that at no time did the HR rep ever get back to me with an answer.
Initial contact is great, very professional and prompt. I guess once the decision is made that the candidate is not a good fit, they don't feel that they have to continue the communication process. The puzzling part is that if I'm not a good fit, why do they continue to bring me in for interviews?
I have heard that work life balance is non-existent and the pay scale is a little below the competition.

Initially filled out application in-store, after inquiring and learning they were indeed hiring. Within one day, received phone call from that store manager, who supplied me with phone number of HR manager. She told me to call to set up interview right away. I called, left message. Next day, i heard back from the HR contact, I told her I would be out of town for a week, and would call her upon my return; she agreed, as they were working on opening new location in Manhattan that very week and she was busy.
Upon my return, I reached out; left a message. No return call. Few days later, called again. We arranged to meet at the store that I originally picked up application. On the given interview date and time, I went in; waited several minutes, was told she was there but "busy." Twenty minutes after I'd arrived, a store manager greeted me and sat down with my application for an interview. (No explanation as to where the HR person went to.) We had pleasant conversation; he indicated he thought I was strong candidate but all I had to do still was meet with the HR manager. He said I should hear from her within that week. As the week went on, nothing. I followed-up with a call, left message. She called me back, and we arranged to meet uptown, at the new location. When that day arrived, I traveled up to the new store, asked for her. I was told she'd left for the day. I left my name and number and word that I was there for an interview. The store associate who took the info was very apologetic, and said I should hear from her soon. Days went by; nothing, not to mention not an apology for standing me up for the SECOND interview. After about a week, I called left a message, stating it would just be professional for her to return a call, as I was fielding other offers and interviews for part time jobs. Within two days of that, I stopped by the original store where I picked up the application. The manager who met with me recognized me and came over to speak, asking if I'd met with the HR woman yet. I explained to him the course of events over the past month or so. He too, was apologetic, and mentioned the new store as the distraction. I politely agreed but suggested that as a hiring manager, it's just proper to get back to people, especially when you stand them up a couple times. I asked for the district manager's name and address, and although the associates were nice enough to supply me with the info, I could tell they were surprised that I would ask for the info. The very next day (surprise), I received a call from the HR rep, telling me that the Dumbo, Brooklyn manager was looking for a part-time candidate. She set up an interview for me. In the next couple days, i sat down with the managers of the Brooklyn store, and had what I thought were perfect interview conversations; I answered all their questions thoughtfully and they complimented me on several of my answers. No phone call after, no word. First week of May, I received a post card in the mail noting that there were no positions open for my skills at this time, and my information would be kept on file.

Through a recruiter, I received an interview with the Director Marketing of West Elm. The interview went well, but I got the impression that the President of West Elm was very difficult to work for. A couple weeks later, I went in for a second interview with two of the VPs. I find out the person who I thought I was going to work for left the company.
They had the slightest clue what the position entailed and the VPs were kind of grabbing at strings to figure out how to fill the role. I got along nicely with the two VPs and thought the interview went well. With the Director gone, they weren't sure how West Elm was going to go about their e-commerce business and they would let me know.
A couple months went by and still no answer. I finally heard back from the recruiter saying that West Elm pulled the position because of the "rough economic times". This didn't make sense to me because they already had a bare bones system in place for online.
