Interview Question

QA Analyst Interview Boston, MA

You have a balance beam and 8 golf balls, one golf ball

weighs more than the rest, but not enough to tell by just picking it up. What is the least amount of adjustments you have to make on the balance beam to determine the heaviest golf ball with 100% certainty.

Interview Answer

1 Answer

The answer is 2. Put 3 and 3 on each, if one side is heavier you have a 1 out of 3 chance. Then put 2 of the 3 on the balance beam, if one side is heavier you know which is the heaviest ball, if they are equal it is the ball you left off.
