You have a tool which must remain attatched to a rigid pipe

  until it is in place. Once in place that tool must be free to slide up and down over a set distance. How would you accomplish this without using electronic, hydraulics or mechanical means. All you can use is the movement of the pipe in order to accomplish this.

Think in the most simple terms, don't over think the problem. The same action could be accomplished by a 1/4 turn to the right or a bit of extra weight on the pipe as could be accomplished by some latching mechanism that requires hydraulic or electric inputs. I struggled with this one... a possible answer: Shear pins.
