Software Engineer Intern Interview

Software Engineer Intern

I applied through college or university - interviewed at eBay Inc. in February 2014.

Interview Details – Contacted through on-campus recruiting mailing list. Had one on-campus interview followed by one additional phone interview with the team that I was going to work with, and I was able to get the offer afterwards. The interviewers were really nice and helpful when I was stuck on something, and I didn't feel any pressure during the interview at all.

Interview Question – Method to find all duplicates of letters in a string. A few simple data structure runtime questions. Questions on OO design.   Answer Question

I applied through an employee referral and the process took 3 weeks - interviewed at eBay Inc. in February 2014.

Interview Details – I had gotten an interview through an employee referral. Someone contacted me about a time. There was a miscommunication on their part between the HR and the manager and they didn't call me at the first time we planned, so we had to plan another one. The manager of that team called me and first told me about what they did and then asked me questions about my resume and then asked technical questions.

Interview Question – What's the difference between C++ and Java. I said something about pointers and he wanted me to go more in depth.
What is the difference between string builder and string buffer.
He sent me a code and make suggestions:

import java.math.BigDecimal;

public class CashCalculatorBasic {

public BigDecimal getCalculatedAvailableBalance(BigDecimal currentBalance, BigDecimal totalDebits, BigDecimal totalCredits) {

BigDecimal result = currentBalance.subtract(totalDebits).add(totalCredits);

System.out.println("The calculated result is " + result);

return result;

  }

public static void main(String[] args) {

    new CashCalculatorBasic().getCalculatedAvailableBalance(

    new BigDecimal("1250.00"), new BigDecimal("250.00"), new BigDecimal("500.00"));

}

}

Mobile Software Engineer (IOS SDK and App Dev) Interview

Mobile Software Engineer (IOS SDK and App Dev)
San Jose, CA

I applied online and the process took 4+ weeks - interviewed at eBay Inc. in January 2014.

Interview Details – I interviewed with Ebay shorty after graduating college in December 2013. Interview was at PayPal's headquarters. The process consisted of two phone interviews, then a final onsite interview which consisted of 5 hour long one on one interviews. Four technical interviews, one behavioral.

Interview Question – The technical questions covered a wide range of areas which I appreciated. The areas included object oriented design, architecture design, problem-solving/algorithms, objective-c (blocks, view controllers, etc.), and mobile specific questions. The most difficult question I was asked was to design a document upload/fetcher system for mobile (kinda like dropbox for the iphone). The difficulty was really in all the details of the problem (caching, database modeling, security, sessions, etc). Algorithm questions ranged from binary tree search questions to array pattern searching. The most unexpected question was the interviewer gave me a stream of digits and asked me to find the pattern. I got really stumped on this problem, it was my last interview of the day and I just blanked out. I guess I did well enough throughout the day because I got the job. By no means an easy interview, but not extremely hard, I was extremely well prepared as I had been interviewing for a while. Id say its on the average to difficult scale, if you are bad at architecting systems then this interview would have been HIGH diff.   Answer Question

I applied through college or university and the process took 1 week - interviewed at eBay Inc. in February 2014.

Interview Details – I was setup for a screening interview through a recruiter who received my resume via career fair. The preliminary interview was conducted over the phone with an engineer at the company. The engineer admitted to knowing little about the position I was applying for but he gave me a good idea of what is expected of potential employees at eBay Inc. It was a 30-45 minute technical interview discussing questions ranging from development environment to data structures.

As with most jobs, the biggest mistake is answering things in the way of "Well in general, I think I do a pretty good job with _______." These are usually panel interviews ( 2 or more interviewers).

Interview Question – Tell me about a time where you did not get along with your supervisor and what did you do and what was the outcome?   Answer Question

I applied online and the process took 2+ weeks - interviewed at eBay Inc. in February 2014.

Interview Details – The process was pretty straightforward. I applied online at their website and got a call from the recruiter Peter O' Neil in a couple of weeks. An interview was scheduled for 1 hr over the phone. Initially I was asked a bunch of knowledge-based qs related to arrays,hash tables,REST,JSon,Relational Databases etc.

Interview Question – I was given a class definition and function signature in Java and I had to define the function. I was told that we know how to read characters from a stream of input characters and my function had to return a line of characters from the input stream. Had to handle the corresponding errors.   Answer Question

I applied through an employee referral - interviewed at eBay Inc. in February 2014.

Interview Details – I got referred by a current employee and was set up for a technical phone screen. It was just bad. I hated the interviewer- he was mean and kind of impatient. Didn't let me finish my answer/didnt interpret my answers well. He asked a variety of questions from data structures, algorithms, and pointers. Then he went over my resume to ask questions about a project I did in school.
