I interviewed in San Francisco, CA and was asked:
"looking at the overall architecture of the banking system (mainframe to the end client), if you had to introduce a change or bring in a new feature, where would you even start the process of planning?"

I took this as an opportunity to describe how I would create an API for the software I'd be writing to speak to the servers and back-office systems. These things need to be well defined before other software engineers and/or vendors get a fleshed out spec and their hands on the actual assignment.
